Will Science Change Your Business, Customers, or World? | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Today's Snapshot considers breakthroughs in Nuclear Fusion energy, Graphene's amazing new conductivity and programmes to grow biofuels in the desert. The dream of a completely clean, high powered and almost limitless renewable energy source is getting closer. Nuclear Fusion is the process by which atoms are compressed to such a degree that their nuclei fuse, releasing a huge amount of energy. Essentially it is the opposite of current Nuclear Power, based on fission whereby large nuclei are torn apart to release energy. This is the process which happens in stars, turning Hydrogen into the heavier Helium, and all other natural elements.
Fouad Bendris's insight:

Graphene experimentation is still less than a decade old (it was only discovered in 2004), but experiments like this indicate there could be a future of Graphene-based microchips, enabling smaller, more powerful processors which require less energy to run and lose less as heat. Think of having a mobile phone with a charge that could last for days and you see the reason to get excited ...

Moore’s Law Will Soon End, but Progress Doesn’t Have to ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
The future of technology is always more human and Meyerson expects that, ”by 2020, we’ll still be improving system performance exponentially, but we’ll have to change our conception of information technology once again, this time from machines that store, analyze and retrieve information to systems that are active partners in a very natural human/machine collaboration.” “The cognitive era will be ultimate bridge across the digital divide,” he notes, “spanning barriers of not only technology but that of language, education and skill level as well. IT will essentially become so advanced that it disappears along with previous institutional barriers. Even a teenager will have access to resources that only the most well-equipped research facilities have today and they will be able to access it in real time.”
Fouad Bendris's insight:
Going Beyond Silicon - The end of Moore’s Law is not a new issue. In fact, Meyerson argues that it first began unraveling in 2003, when insulating components within transistors began failing due to quantum mechanical effects. Since then, chip manufacturers have been finding new materials that are more resistant to decay in their basic atomic properties and progress has continued.

IT’S TEMPTING TO envision the vehicles of the future the way Passengers does—luminous, spacious, expertly designed. But in reality, you’d probably settle for an air travel experience that’s even slightly better than what you get today—or at least, not worse. In which case, you’re in luck. “I don’t envision any grand, over the top cabin and seating designs,” says Raymond Kollau, founder of Amsterdam-based research and innovation agency AirlineTrends. “Certification standards are strict in the industry, budgets, in general, limited, and airlines quite conservative.” But you can expect gradual change: Even economy class will someday feel a bit softer, a bit warmer, a bit faster, a bit easier to sleep in. Mostly. Here’s what’s coming.

It’s designed to shuttle as many as 100 petabytes–around 100,000 terabytes–per truck. That’s enough storage to hold five copies of the Internet Archive (a comprehensive backup of the web both present and past), which contains “only” about 18.5 petabytes of unique data.

Learning What to Stop Doing in the New Year !

Learning What to Stop Doing in the New Year ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
To help you assess your own propensity to stifle innovation by being too wedded to the present, Govindarajan has produced a simple test. All you need to do is answer the following questions using a 5 point scale, with 1 representing ‘strongly disagree’, and 5 representing ‘strongly agree’.
- We usually promote from within
- Our culture is homogeneous
- We have a strong culture
- Employees typically stick around a long time
- Hiring from the outside is usually limited to entry-level positions
- When people are recruited from outside, we have strong methods to indoctrinate them into our culture
- Our track record of success is a long one
- We strongly believe that you shouldn’t mess with a successful formula
- The senior management team have been around a long time
- They have also worked primarily in our industry
- The management team seldom has those from outside recruited into it
- Meeting short-term financial goals tends to drive performance
Fouad Bendris's insight:
The start of any new year is often a time for reflection, both from an individual and organizational perspective. We examine our lives and try and figure out things we want to do better. We aspire and strive, set ourselves challenges and goals that will make us better ...

UCL - The Social Media Lab from Belgium !

UCL - The Social Media Lab from Belgium ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

First, we particularly work on the intelligibility of social media activity for ourselves and others. Based on current research development in different fields (social graph, linguistics), we identify relevant measures of activities that can help us to make sense of the activity (i.e., online information sharing and collaboration). Then we prototype dashboards with those analytics. From there, we develop a number of research questions :

1 - What are the most suitable visualizations for each metric based on the literature on data visualisations?

2 - How do users make sense of these metrics?

3 - What role emotional design plays in the understanding of data visualization?

4 - How does this ‘sense making’ influence their online behavior?

5 - How does the context of usage influence this ‘sense making’?

Fouad Bendris's insight:
François Lambotte, PhD in Management Science, professor, and deputy dean of ESPO (University in economical, scoial, political, and communication sciences) is heading the UCL Social Media Lab. As regards new challenges related to entrepreneurship and digital economy. We realized that a number of similar labs in universities existed around the world. They were all focused on social media use by individuals (consumers and citizens). We decided to differentiate ourselves by looking to social media use in professional context (www.socialmedialab.be).

10 Great Ideas That Were Originally Rejected !

10 Great Ideas That Were Originally Rejected ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Even when it’s the top management of your company or your client who ask you to be innovative and expects you to break patterns, it is still wise to keep in mind that they are as conservative as ever. So the question is; how will you be able to help your colleague, your top manager, your shareholder or your venture capitalist to support your idea and fund the development and execution of it? As you’re proposing an innovation to them, you have to be aware that these decision makers who are assessing your new concept might know very little about the new target market, the new product and business model or the new technology. They would like as much tangible proof as they can get before making a decision. As long as they haven’t decided anything they don’t run any risk. Once they say yes, they will be in it up to their necks. The essential question is, “Why should we fund the development of this new product or service”?
Fouad Bendris's insight:
History has shown us that a lot of wise people haven’t been able to recognize the potential of a great idea.
In a new business case, it is your challenge to be convincing. The more radical your innovation is, the bigger the challenge as there will be more uncertainties. In the boardroom your idea will be evaluated from at least five perspectives:
1. The Customer: will they buy it?
2. The Technology: can we deliver it?
3. The Business model: will it pay off?
4. The Risk: what do we risk? What if it’s a failure? What if it’s a huge success?
5. The Fit: Why should we do it? What’s the strategic perspective?

The #Social #Intrapreneur Guide !

The #Social #Intrapreneur Guide ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Based on the collective experience of my fellow intrapreneurs, I would formulate three recommendations:
1 - Do not stay alone. You need friends to crash-test your ideas with a constructive spirit. You need also experts to support you in complex fields such as law, taxes, finance, product design, etc…
2 - Build a business model, answering all questions in detail : quantity and characteristics of the product, pricing, customers, geography, revenues, costs, suppliers, competitors, etc…
3 - Involve the top management: the more disruptive your idea is, the more support you need from the top. But it is like a gun with only one bullet, you need to use the right arguments at the right moment, when you already have some supporters and the beginning of a business plan.
Fouad Bendris's insight:
For classical companies, social intrapreneurship is important because CSR is entering a new era: after the age of communication and marketing, CSR is now integrated into the business processes. Social intrapreneurs are needed to implement social innovations, speaking both the business language of the company they work for and the language of social businesses they want to support ...
