(From the article): Don't talk to think. Thinking out loud is confusing when the person doing the verbal processing is the leader of those who are listening ('Is this an instruction? Are we really going to do this?'). Only do it with people who know you well, or make it clear when you are 'just musing'.

"I’m pretty convinced that you can’t be a perfectionist and enjoy yoga. There’s always something new to learn. When you’re learning, you’re not perfect. If you have to be perfect, you’re not going to learn anything new. All the time I’ve spent on a yoga mat learning something new has taught me that I don’t have to be so damn hard on myself. Ironically, I’m probably doing better work off the mat because I’ve lightened up on the pressure I put on myself to be perfect."

Power Quotes: Group Creativity

group brainstorming meetings can become productive drivers of company innovation or simply a waste of company time.

Establish rules of the game. Some popular and effective rules:

Suspend all judgmentThere’s no such thing as a bad ideaGo for quantity, not qualityEmbrace wild, audacious ideasThe origin of the idea is irrelevant

Shaking things up can have a dramatic impact on a group’s ability to collaborate freely and build upon one another’s ideas. That’s how innovative solutions are born.

Harvard's Ronald Heifetz urges heads-of-state to think less like surgeons, more like psychiatrists.

Terence R. Egan's curator insight, November 15, 2013 9:08 PM

[KEY POINTS]

"The dominant view of leadership is that the leader has the vision and the rest is a sales problem," he says. "I think that notion of leadership is bankrupt." That approach only works for technical problems, he says, where there's a right answer and an expert knows what it is.

"When a patient comes to a surgeon, the surgeon's default setting is to say, 'You've got a problem? I'll take the problem off your shoulders and I'll deliver back to you a solution.' In psychiatry, when a person comes to you with a problem, it's not your job actually to solve their problem. It's your job to develop their capacity to solve their own problem."

"(T)he people are the problem and the people are the solution," he says. "And leadership then is about mobilizing and engaging the people with the problem rather than trying to anesthetize them so you can go off and solve it on your own."

Heifetz says, leaders should think less like surgeons, and more like psychiatrists.

(From the article): No one wants to spend their lifetime doing something unimportant. People want to do something that matters.  People want significance in their life. When we strive for success in life, we ask, “How can I add value to myself?”  When we want significance we need to ask, “How can I add value to others?” Instead of asking what others can do for me, we need to ask what we can I do for others.

donhornsby's curator insight, October 8, 2013 6:34 AM

(From the article) DS: What is the biggest truth about creativity?

DB: Creativity is a team sport. We tend to think of outstandingly creative people as working alone, slaving away in a studio or workshop like a mad scientist or genius inventor. The truth is that almost all outstandingly creative people have teams behind them. Thomas Edison didn’t work on the light bulb, or much of anything else, alone. At the peak of his performance inventing, he had a team of 15-20 inventors working alongside him at his Menlo Park facility. Michelangelo didn’t paint the Sistine chapel alone; he built a team of 13 artists who assisted him at all stages of the project. If you really want to enhance your creativity and generate innovative solutions, start by finding people who will work together as a team.
