How Simple Mini Habits Can Change Your Life

How Simple Mini Habits Can Change Your Life | Formazione e Coaching | Scoop.it
You can change nearly any area of your life; and at one mini habit at a time, it's easier than you think.

The reason people fail to change their lives, and fail to instill new habits, is because they try to do too much at once. In simplest terms, if your new habit requires more willpower than you can muster, you will fail. If your new habit requires less willpower than you can muster, you will succeed.

donhornsby's curator insight, December 2, 2013 6:48 AM

(From the article): The workplace and job market is already fiercely competitive. It will only intensify as employers continue to be ultra-selective in their hiring decisions. The five areas featured are marks of an employee willing to do good work, own their development and mistakes. Furthermore, the goodwill developed from demonstrating skills in any of the five ares will reverberate beyond the current employer.

Frank J. Papotto, Ph.D.'s curator insight, December 2, 2013 10:25 AM

Good points about what managers ought to be encouraging in employee behavior.  It is helpful to understand behavioral priorities in terms of organizational effectiveness.  As suggested flexibilty is critical for coping with change; but robust engagement means more dedicated effort, broad alignment means more focused effort,  and superb execution  means getting excellent results from efforts. These are the other priorities leaders and managers ought to support in their employees.

"Author Chris Lowney has observed the behavior of the first Jesuit pope and used him as a case study in effective leadership. In his new book, “Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads,” Lowney writes of Francis’ first days as pope: “We were not watching someone trying to act like a pope. We were watching a person unafraid to be who he was.”

John Michel's curator insight, December 2, 2013 8:31 AM

You will be a more effective leader if you place your own self-interests aside. People will work harder for you. Loyalty will increase. You don’t need an academic study to prove that – just think of the bosses, coaches, even parents, who have led you and helped you reach a better place.

Great article from Feb, 2013 regarding the role of sleep and relaxation on productivity.  Good personal thoughts and ideas for company use also.

Bettina Ascaino's curator insight, November 23, 2013 3:45 AM

About the role of relaxation and rest on productivity.

"Paradoxically, the best way to get more done may be to spend more time doing less. A new and growing body of multidisciplinary research shows that strategic renewal — including daytime workouts, short afternoon naps, longer sleep hours, more time away from the office and longer, more frequent vacations — boosts productivity, job performance and, of course, health."

Angie Mc's curator insight, November 23, 2013 3:01 PM

Renewal isn't just for adults. Short bursts of focused concentration plus breaks help children to leanr how not to dawdle. Renewal takes discipline and practice.

Harvard's Ronald Heifetz urges heads-of-state to think less like surgeons, more like psychiatrists.

Terence R. Egan's curator insight, November 15, 2013 9:08 PM

[KEY POINTS]

"The dominant view of leadership is that the leader has the vision and the rest is a sales problem," he says. "I think that notion of leadership is bankrupt." That approach only works for technical problems, he says, where there's a right answer and an expert knows what it is.

"When a patient comes to a surgeon, the surgeon's default setting is to say, 'You've got a problem? I'll take the problem off your shoulders and I'll deliver back to you a solution.' In psychiatry, when a person comes to you with a problem, it's not your job actually to solve their problem. It's your job to develop their capacity to solve their own problem."

"(T)he people are the problem and the people are the solution," he says. "And leadership then is about mobilizing and engaging the people with the problem rather than trying to anesthetize them so you can go off and solve it on your own."

Heifetz says, leaders should think less like surgeons, and more like psychiatrists.
