Magnesium, calcium, potassium, and vitamin K are all essential minerals for building strong bones. Researchers have also found that magnesium levels affect several brain chemicals thought to play key roles in migraines, and people who have migraines have lower than normal amounts of magnesium in their brain.

 

Health Tips:  Dark leafy greens are one of the best sources for magnesium. Eat Swiss chard (pictured), Spinach, Broccoli, and Mustard Greens as well as nuts, as in Almonds, Cashews ,Peanuts,  Pine, and Brazil nuts;; seeds as in Pumpkin and Sunflower; beans as in Navy and Black beans, Chickpeas, Lentils, and Split Peas; Whole grains as in Quinoa.Brown rice,, Oatmeal and Artichoke hearts. 400mg daily and take a supplement too if you're not getting enough from the foods you consume.

Sugar, aka sweet poison is one of the most consumed ingredients in food and is one of the most harmful for your health. Sugar has been linked to Diabetes, Heart disease, Metabolic Disorder, Cancer, Depression, and now Alzheimer's Disease.  Simple carbohydrates in refined foods such as white bread, flour, pastries, snacks, donuts, cookies,  pies, chips, sodas, and all other lab engineered ingredients that are high in sugar and have very low to no fiber are absorbed almost instantly into your bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream they trigger an immediate surge in blood sugar (glucose) plus a rise in the feel good hormones which is known as a sugar high. This  is short lasting, causing a rebound effect with low levels of blood sugar and serotonin, a sluggish feeling with an urge to sleep, and a depressed mood known as the sugar blues. Sugar also affects your memory and the size of your hippocampus is smaller  (part of the brain responsible for memory and learning).

 

Health Tips:  Eat complex carbohydrates as in veggies,, fruits, and ancient grains as complex carbs increase brain levels of serotonin and keep them elevated. Did you know that your brain comprising only 2% of your total body weight, consumes 30% of the calories you take in? Your brain does need glucose, but in the form of complex carbs which are released slowly. When your brain is working optimally, it uses sugar quickly for fuel. If your glucose levels run low, your brain function slows way down causing you to feel tired and foggy. Do yourself a big favor and eat fruit, use cinnamon, cloves, ginger, carob, vanilla bean, and some organic extracts for those sweet flavors you crave. Being healthy is a true gift you give yourself.
