Why You Shouldn’t Stalk Your Kid Online

Why You Shouldn’t Stalk Your Kid Online | Informal Learning: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

By Emily Bazelon, Slate

Microsoft researcher and NYU media and culture professor danah boyd(who prefers to style her name in all lowercase) is one of my favorite people to talk with about teenagers and technology. That’s not because I agree with her all the time—often, I find that we see questions about privacy, use of technology, and online bullying a little or a lot differently. But danah is the best kind of sparring partner because she always tells me something I didn’t know along the way.

Why does physical activity during childhood matter?

Most scientific research on the topic of physical inactivity has focused on the consequences of physical inactivity for physical health, with significant attention to obesity and medical conditions such as diabetes. He describes how he would ask his son questions like, “What is the mystery number that totals 29 if one multiplies it by two and adds seven?” When we were eight, his son and I shared more than an age; we shared an unquenchable desire to play and, by playing, to learn.
