International Tests Show Achievement Gaps in All countries, with Big Gains for U.S. Disadvantaged Students

International Tests Show Achievement Gaps in All countries, with Big Gains for U.S. Disadvantaged Students | The Global Achievement Gap: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

by Martin Carnoy and Richard Rothstein, Economic Policy Institute

In a new EPI report, What do international tests really show about U.S. student performance?, we disaggregate international student test scores by social class and show that the commonplace condemnation of U.S. student performance on such tests is misleading, exaggerated, and in many cases, based on misinterpretation of the facts. Ours is the first study of which we are aware to compare the performance of socioeconomically similar students across nations.

Parent Cortical Mass's insight:

This study digs deep into the PISA tests results and provides new data to feed the edreform beast.

Teacher pay around the world

Teacher pay around the world | The Global Achievement Gap: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it
Just how underpaid are American teachers? Dick Startz shows that teacher salaries are not only low compared to other similarly educated American workers, but also much lower relatively than those of teachers in other industrialized nations. Increasing teacher salaries would not solve all issues in education, but it would go a long way in making teaching a more attractive career.

American Millennials are among the world's least skilled

American Millennials are among the world's least skilled | The Global Achievement Gap: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

Researchers at Princeton-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) expected it to be when they administered a test called the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Sponsored by the OECD, the test was designed to measure the job skills of adults, aged 16 to 65, in 23 countries. When the results were analyzed by age group and nationality, it is clear that Millennials in the U.S. fall short when it comes to the skills employers want most: literacy (including the ability to follow simple instructions), practical math, and — hold on to your hat — a category called “problem-solving in technology-rich environments.”
