'Value Added' Measures for High School Questioned | Teacher Effectiveness Policy: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

by Stephen Sawchuk, Education Week

"At the high school level, it is quite a bit less reliable, so the scope for using this to improve student outcomes is much more limited."

Alternative Certification Deemed Weak by NCTQ in New Teacher-Prep Report | Teacher Effectiveness Policy: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it
The Washington-based group contends that alternative certification suffers from low standards and poor training, just like its traditional, university-based brethren.
Parent Cortical Mass's insight:

It makes common sense that this is true.  "In this latest, "something to offend everyone" edition, the NCTQ continues to find fault with most of the programs based at higher education institutions.  But it also identifies no shortage of troubles with alternative programs."

Why Improving Teacher Hiring is Better Than Eliminating Teacher Tenure

Why Improving Teacher Hiring is Better Than Eliminating Teacher Tenure | Teacher Effectiveness Policy: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

by Dale S. Rose, Harvard Education Publishing Group

The U.S. Department of Education predicts schools will hire more than 300,000 new teachers next year. While many will turn out to be fantastic educators, some of these teachers will inevitably struggle in their new jobs, and sadly, some may be just plain horrible in the classroom.

My suggestion is a simple one: Let’s hire better teachers to start with. Hiring better teachers eliminates poor performers before they set foot in a classroom (and before they get tenure). This is by far the most cost effective long-term solution to improve overall teaching quality on a national scale.

Evaluating Teachers with Classroom Observations: Lessons Learned in Four Districts

Evaluating Teachers with Classroom Observations: Lessons Learned in Four Districts | Teacher Effectiveness Policy: What Parents Need to Know | Scoop.it

By: Grover J. "Russ" Whitehurst, Matthew M. Chingos and Katharine Lunquist, Brookings Institute

This report examines the design and performance of new teacher evaluation systems in four urban school districts.

Under current teacher evaluation systems, it is hard for a teacher who doesn’t have top students to get a top rating. Teachers with students with higher incoming achievement levels receive classroom observation scores that are higher on average than those received by teachers whose incoming students are at lower achievement levels, and districts do not have processes in place to address this bias.

Parent Cortical Mass's insight:

Boy does this make sense.
