By Elizabeth Jensen

"In its first television foray, TED has joined forces with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the New York public broadcaster WNET for a one-hour special, “TED Talks Education,” to be broadcast on PBS on Tuesday. If it is successful, the program could become a template for future joint projects, said Juliet Blake, one of the show’s executive producers and the TED official charged with bringing the conferences to television."

Cut, copy, and paste are three mischief makers. Granted they are good guys on a normal day, but in the hands of a blackguard they turn into shears hacking away your hard work. That’s all it takes for plagiarists to do their dirty work. If you have been working creatively on the web for some time, rest assured that you have been a victim of plagiarism at one time or another. Or you will be.

Feds give nudge to competency-based education | Inside Higher Ed

Feds give nudge to competency-based education | Inside Higher Ed | For College Students | Scoop.it

ByPaul Fain

The U.S. Department of Education has endorsed competency-based education with the release today of a letter that encourages interested colleges to seek federal approval for degree programs that do not rely on the credit hour to measure student learning.

Department officials also said Monday that they will give a green light soon to Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America, which would be the first to attempt the “direct assessment” of learning – meaning no link to the credit hour – and also be eligible for participation in federal financial aid programs.

Brainstorming is sometimes a spur-of-the-moment activity. Arguably, the best tool for generating ideas remains the humble pen and paper. Again arguably, the second best tools are mobile phones and tablets.

College students accrue hundreds of thousands in debt with little hope of paying it back. It's a cruel game

Have you read http://www.amazon.com/Strapped-Americas-30-Somethings-Cant-Ahead/dp/1400079977/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360170859&sr=1-1&keywords=Strapped The issue they point to really digs in deep to the emerging nightmare of college debt. The trouble isn't just something that's coming for future generations of college students it's here and now, particularly among non-traditional students who are trying to break through some economic ceilings by seeking a college degree. The tentacles of the problem are many and far reaching. We have created a culture where a college degree is being used as a tool of exclusion for employment. People who are not really interested in being educated/expanded are filing into colleges and universities simply for having a job. They expect their schools to be vocational training, and treat the experience with a consumer mentality. In many instances the theories and missions of colleges and universities have helped create a culture of entitlement that has horrible consequences on a variety of levels. We are not developing a strong pool of skilled tradespeople because they have been convinced that trades are "less than" and we have mountains of students who are disinterested in scholarship. They are taking out loans and accessing government resources and demanding more services all at the same time. The effects are visible on every point of the continuum. Doctoral degrees are flooding the system at the top end, and BA degrees are being used like high school diplomas for "good job" eligibility. By the time it's all over everyone is buried in debt and few are satisfied with their careers. This cannot continue.

Proposed change in financial aid has unintended consequences for online courses

Proposed change in financial aid has unintended consequences for online courses | For College Students | Scoop.it

"A proposed change that would lead to smaller Pell Grants for some students enrolled in online classes was intended to prevent financial aid fraud. But advocates for distance education fear it’s the first in a possible series of unintended consequences, as the Education Department prepares to take steps to crack down on fraud in negotiated rule-making hearings later this year."
