Experimental opera inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper"

Experimental opera inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

"A mixed-media, experimental opera produced by a Hackney-based electronic artist and avant-garde vocalist is to be performed in May at The Horse Hospital in central London.

Room of Worlds is an hour-long chamber opera for live voices, electronics and video. It charts the physical and psychological journey of a woman in a patriarchal landscape of domesticity, love and loneliness, through medicine and memory to the edge of madness.

Electronic artist Charles Webber composed the opera and also produced video for it, while experimental vocalist and former member of punk group Crass Eve Libertine, wrote the libretto.

It is loosely based on the autobiographical short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, written in the nineteenth century and regarded as a significant piece of early American feminist literature."

Room of Worlds is at The Horse Hospital, London, from 9– 10 May 2014.

The Second Sex – a visual footnote | e-flux

The Second Sex – a visual footnote | e-flux | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

A proposal by Tobi Maier, curator in residency

The exhibition The Second Sex – a visual footnote is a visual essay inspired by the book of the same name by French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, whose existentialist take on many of the issues of feminism first emerged with the publication of Le Deuxième Sexe in 1949. One of de Beauvoir’s principal challenges was to foster women’s emancipation and the recognition of their working force. Through a close reading of de Beauvoir’s seminal book, the exhibition introduces a number of works that lean towards ideas highlighted in her texts, such as representations of women in myths and the descriptions of their lived situations.

The Second Sex – a visual footnote presents installations by three woman artists spanning a variety of media, from film, sculpture, and photography to collage.
