What are your digital rights? | Why do digital rights matter? | Privacy | Cyberespionage | FootprintDigital | Scoop.it
Why do digital rights matter?

As we increasingly conduct our lives online – shopping, socializing and sharing information – our digital rights, particularly the rights to privacy and freedom of expression, are becoming more important. We need to understand how our data is being used by companies, governments and internet giants such as Facebook and Google. Is it being handled fairly and scrupulously, or sold or shared without our consent?

Revelations about surveillance programmes and digital hacking have sparked political and diplomatic wrangles. National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden has called for new international laws to protect data privacy, arguing that now we know about mass data surveillance it is time to “assert our traditional and digital rights so that we can protect them”.

This vigilante virus protects you against malware attacks, quotes Richard Stallman | FootprintDigital | Scoop.it
Symantec has discovered malware that infects routers and Internet of Things devices, then cleans out any existing malware and locks the devices down against future attacks.

Symantec first became aware of the superhero malware—dubbed Linux.Wifatch—in 2014, when an independent researcher noticed weirdness occurring on his router. As it turns out, the router had been transformed into a zombie, thrall to a large, sophisticated peer-to-peer botnet. He reported via Twitter that he had identified over 13,000 other devices infected with it.

That prompted other researchers to chime in that they too had identified it, variously nicknaming it Reincarna and Zollard — which was spotted in Internet-connected devices as far back as 2013.

Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 25, 2015 10:48 AM

I chose this resource because they way teachers use social media has been a sore spot for many in our building. I support the idea of using social media in a professional construct and I feel that it is a powerful tool. However, even in teacher circles I've witnessed far too much negativity and I'm not sure that those individuals understand that the toxic nature of some posts are doing much damage to our school culture (and the community perceptions). I'm shocked to find that some teachers continue to use some social media to converse with students in non-academic affairs. It is truly not a good idea. I think this resource would be great to distribute during PD that occurs at the beginning of a school year.
