Restaurants Are Now Adding Surcharges For Obamacare...

Restaurants Are Now Adding Surcharges For Obamacare... | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
In case you're still wondering how Obamacare is...
Sam Jackson's insight:

I have heard the rumors.  Now it is true.  Some restaurants are adding the ACA cost on the "consumer check" and it is a . . . , but you can fill in the blank space.  Instead of just hiding the increase in the menu the restaurant is disclosing a cost to the public.  What is the "real issue" here?  Please reply.

Subway Says It's Removing A Chemical Used In Yoga Mats From Its Bread

Subway Says It's Removing A Chemical Used In Yoga Mats From Its Bread | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
The chemical is used in shoe rubber and yoga mats.
Sam Jackson's insight:

The statement in the article of particular interest was "In the latest petition targeting Subway, Hari noted that the azodicarbonamide used in its bread "as a bleaching agent" is also used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber." I also understand it is edible and has passed FDA requirements.  My question is why the fuss?  It sound more like Hari has been hitting the mats too hard and has not been walking in subway's shoes.  Well, now, we at least enjoy "breaking bread" with Subway more often without the "sole food."

In US, ‘Natural’ Food Label Means Nothing

In US, ‘Natural’ Food Label Means Nothing | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
There is no definition of "natural."
Sam Jackson's insight:

Never believe an atom because they make up everything!  That is a true and a natural statement though twisted. I guess this is just my day to be accusatory and somewhat satirical – why do businesses, politicians, aunts, uncles, cousins, and just about everyone you meet feel the need to lie or twist the facts.  Natural food labels really do mean nothing!  Since the first natural label for foods was created we have been stretching that meaning and pretending that certain foods are “All Natural” or “Natural.”   Today some of us wiser food folks are actually running away from the “Natural” concept including several manufacturers, restaurants, and consumers.

Anyway, use your noggin and decide for yourself - don’t be simply influenced by the word “Natural.”  If you are a food marketer and have not wised up you should get a leg up on a new wave of marketing concepts for your target audience(s).  And OMG don’t go the Organic route.

Famous Restaurant Chains That Are Hard to Find

Famous Restaurant Chains That Are Hard to Find | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
Source: Mister DonutMany of America’s once-great restaurant chains are now impossible to find. While McDonald’s and Subway locations continue to multiply, Howard Johnson’s and Chi-Chi’s are all but forgotten.
Sam Jackson's insight:

Why is it so hard for so many American industries/businesses to change whether it is the automobile or the restaurant chain?  Established businesses, and I might add, very successful businesses, are many times so stubborn, corporate is so far up in the clouds (or up somewhere else),  just cannot see what is in front of their face, and do not listen to their staff.  Then poor decisions result in an ever widening and deepening sink hole.   I guess the good news is we can have a nostalgic stroll down memory lane as with this article and smile at what we used to know.

Sam Jackson's insight:

Not real sure how much of the foods we choose are simply by a choice of want or a choice of what is available and what one can afford.  In the more affluent countries I am sure choice is more by want and marketing influence.

You could move a 'whole lotta' product with this method that's far more fuel-efficient than air travel.  You might leave competitors 'dazed and confused' by how quickly you're able to get goods to retailers.  OK, I'll stop 'rambling on' with the zeppelin jokes.

Check Out The High-Tech 7-Eleven That Just Opened In The Financial District | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
Touch-screen ordering, Amazon lockers, and more.
Sam Jackson's insight:

A couple of months ago I reviewed how the many of the modern convenience stores are a serious threat to fast food operations; and most especially in the early morning 6:00 to 8:00 AM. Granted, this 7-Eleven that just opened in the financial district of NYC is a huge leap from their normal stores but we can expect more perhaps shorter leaps from 7-Eleven. We are already seeing more and more changes in the convenience stores all across the country and traffic is increasing.  I think it’s great as long as the pickled eggs and Vienna sausages have shelf space.

This Logo Change Caused Tropicana Sales To Plunge

This Logo Change Caused Tropicana Sales To Plunge | Foodservice Chatter | Scoop.it
Yahoo will reveal its new logo tomorrow after 30 days of testing. Past failures help explain its caution and strategy.
Sam Jackson's insight:

Sam says:  Consumers, to a large extent, in their normal grocery shopping are not today by nature "shopping" - they are more gatherers - a periodical and habitual grab and go gatherer.  Most grocery consumers are not hunters, they are gatherers.  When there is a noticeable change on the shelf regarding their practice of grab and go, hesitation weighs in, the consumer may become fickle, and then contrary about purchasing a change concerning their normal food gathering.  It seems rather logical that the brand never wants the consumer to hesitate their normal grab.  Hesitation may cause the normal loyal customer to think.  Brands need consumers to think when the consumer is not their customer.   Oh, well, that is my opinion about the fun world of grocery cart traffic, cart rage, and OMG what have they done to my brand?
