Fructose consumption not linked to blood pressure, finds review | FoodieDoc says: | Scoop.it

WORRIED ABOUT HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP ?

Prolonged consumption of a fructose rich diet does NOT  lead to increases in blood pressure, according to the findings of a new systematic review of the evidence.

Published in the Journal,  Hypertension, the study found a significant decrease in diastolic pressure in people who ate fructose for an extended time.

Fructose, a sugar found in fruit and veggies is the same compound found in high-fructose corn syrup widely used in the food industry today.

Meta-analysis supports garlic’s heart benefits

Contrary to popular belief, a daily intake of garlic may only reduce cholesterol(5%) and triglyceride (6%) levels by a small amount, says a meta-analysis of 26 studies that provides some clarity to the inconsistent clinical trials data. The reduction is small, according to an article in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.  However, there may be other effects such as the lowering of  blood pressure. -- FoodieDoc

2012 Antioxidant Market: Strong & Sophisticated - Nutraceuticals World

2012 Antioxidant Market: Strong & Sophisticated - Nutraceuticals World | FoodieDoc says: | Scoop.it

In 2010, HealthFocus reported the following  top Health issues for Americans:

Mental sharpness (65%),

Heart health (62%),

Cancer (61%),

Vision problems (57%),

Arthritis (53%),

Appearance/skin (51%), and

Joint heath (51%).

Many of these conditions are related to oxidative stress and free radicals.  It is no wonder that demand for anti-oxidants continues to be on the rise

Today’s consumers— want to understand how antioxidants help their well-being, especially specific health conditions.  The Boomers,  huge in number, with  more disposable income than any previous generation and committed to staying active--means they are likely to consider antioxidants for fighting off premature aging, inflammatory conditions like arthritis and brain-related disorders.

Continuous monitoring needed for aflatoxins in chocolate – study

Continuous monitoring needed for aflatoxins in chocolate – study | FoodieDoc says: | Scoop.it
Researchers in Brazil have found high levels of the potentially lethal contaminant aflatoxin in chocolate and say constant monitoring is required.

Oh no, not in chocolates!

FoodieDoc says:

Aflatoxin results in growth stunting, suppression of the immune system--predisposing individuals to disease, and it is a potent carcinogen

125 samples were studied.  80% of all chocolate examined had aflatoxin.  Dark chocolate has more than the white cocolate which is mostly cocoa butter.   Fat free chocolates had more than non-fat free.

Brazilian chocolate is suspect because of the higher amounts of chocolate used--this means that it is may be present in smaller concentrations in other chocolates.

Tecna s.r.l.'s curator insight, July 8, 2015 4:57 AM

Mycotoxins could be present at the same time in a number of finished products, this is a fact. Contaminated ingredients could be mixed together, and consumers (and ANIMALS as well) could be exposed to many toxins together, even if at low levels. Besides, one single commodity could be poly-contaminated by different toxins: maize could contain aflatoxins and fumonisins; wheat could be contaminated by DON, T-2 toxin and zearalenone at the same time.

A good screening protocol should consist of a panel of reliable analytical kits with one single sample preparation, rapid and easy assay implementation and the availability of a high throughput reader. Tecna Smart Strip line of lateral flow device meets all these requirements and is perfect for a fast semiquantiative or quantitative screening. Besides, B ZERO and Celer ELISA test kits for mycotoxins represent a cost-effective, accurate and sensitive platform of kits for mycotoxins analysis. More information @ www.tecnalab.com

Container Vegetable Gardening

Container Vegetable Gardening | FoodieDoc says: | Scoop.it

My cousin Ruby-Dee plants a container garden every year. Beautiful flowers, fruit and veggies.  I plant herbs (basil, cilantro, mint, rosemary, thyme, dill) in containers, but the prospect of having fresh tomatoes, zuchinni and peppers for roasted salads or stir-fry excites me.

The high prices at the grocery store might prompt me to try this.  Herbs are high in antioxidants, tomatoes have health benefits, the zuchinni and peppers provide vitamins, make you feel full. FoodieDoc, Anna Resurreccion

Container vegetable gardening allows you to grow vegetables almost anywhere. Here are some tips for growing vegetables in small spaces, with big yields.
