Management of the Aflatoxin Risk | The PACA Initiative | FARMD: Forum for Agricultural Risk Management in Development | Technology R &D, Transfer, Commercialization and the Food Value Chain-- for Enhanced Food Security, Nutrition, Health and Economic Development | Scoop.it
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

The problem of aflatoxin contamination requires multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder actionsnot possible to solve by a single actor or discipline.  The problem  and necessitate focus on the cause.

This article briefly describes measures that can be taken to reduce aflatoxin contamination (technology solutions) and to minimize risk of human or animal exposure in the event that contamination does occur (regulatory solutions).  It also states need for creating a policy and institutional environment so that technology solutions and regulation can be effective in abating the aflatoxin problem.

The MTLs for aflatoxins range from 4 ppb in the European Union, 15 ppb in most countries that have regulations, 20 ppb in the USA, to 30 ppb in India. Harmonization of aflatoxin regulations and risk management approaches could facilitate trade. The maximum limits for aflatoxins in foodstuffs are one of the most commonly established toxin limits worldwide, but only 15 African countries have set limits for alfatoxins.

Countries should make provisions for alternative use practices (channeling aflatoxin contaminated food to less risky uses including, but not limited to, diverting to animal feed and, at higher contamination level, biofuel). Incentives for aflatoxin safe food are crucial as they derive demand for aflatoxin control technologies.

Policy and institutional support could be improved, among others, by incorporating aflatoxin control in broader SPS agenda to which nearly all countries are signatories. Building analytical capacity is important. Training at all levels, from grass root to high level policy makers, is needed although the approaches and timing differ.

The article concludes, the complexity of the aflatoxin problem calls for coordinated efforts and integrated approaches for managing the risk to public health, food security, trade and economic development.

The PACA initiative aims at coordinating aflatoxin control across health, trade and agriculture sectors in Africa is making strides against aflatoxins and could serve as a holistic model for addressing the aflatoxin risk and other complex problems.

Can African Farmers Detect Cancer-Causing Toxin With An App? - AFKInsider | Technology R &D, Transfer, Commercialization and the Food Value Chain-- for Enhanced Food Security, Nutrition, Health and Economic Development | Scoop.it
A smartphone app developed by a U.S. professor could be a cheap way for African farmers to manage aflatoxin, a known carcinogen found on crops.
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

Aflatoxin exposure causes cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), suppresion of the immune response making the body more susceptible to disease conditions, and growth stunting in children.

4.5 billion people globally are exposed to this toxic compound, known as one of the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens.

Corn, Peanuts, grains are susceptible to mold growth that produce the compounds.

This app if validated, invented by a University of Colorado scientist, will provide a rapid low cost ($2-3 per test compared to $10-15 test) assessment of aflatoxin contamination. It involves test strips and a smart phone to determine Aflatoxin ranges in grain. The problem is that Sampling errors/difficulties provide false negatives, because most of the aflatoxin is concentrated in only a few of the kernels in a large amount of grain kernels.

Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

Aflatoxins are naturally occurring fungal toxins that contaminate grains and other crops.

They pose one of the world’s most significant food safety risks, particularly in developing countries. They cause stunting, immunosuppression-leading to serious disease states, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

On November 5, IFPRI will launch a series of 19 policy briefs on managing aflatoxins as part of IFPRI’s 2020 Vision Initiative and under the auspices of the IFPRI-led CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH).

Collaboration grows in efforts to prevent and mitigate deadly fungus, planting seeds of hope for African producers | FARMD: Forum for Agricultural Risk Management in Development | Technology R &D, Transfer, Commercialization and the Food Value Chain-- for Enhanced Food Security, Nutrition, Health and Economic Development | Scoop.it
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

Increased awareness of the risks associated with aflatoxin has led to regulations setting maximum tolerable levels. The European Union (EU) established its harmonized levels for aflatoxins in 1998, the FAO/WHO’s Codex Alimentarius in 1999, and many countries have followed suit. The levels permitted by the EU are the strictest in international trade and include specific methods of sampling and testing. In the international trade context.  There has been an ongoing debate over the implications of these regulatory developments for market access, gresulting from the additional costs and upgrades required to achieve compliance.

Aflatoxin is a significant problem in African export supply chains. For example, 41 percent of the more than 500 notifications reported by the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) during 2006–09, from products originating in or consigned from SSA countries, were related to noncompliance with aflatoxin levels.

The aflatoxin problem in SSA has often been considered within a trade barrier context. The domestic market and associated public health and food security dimensions have received much less attention. Recent attempts by private actors and donors to improve quality and safety by setting and enforcing requirements for aflatoxin levels have highlighted the magnitude of the problem on the domestic and regional scale.

Although several African countries have established regulations regarding aflatoxin levels, their limited capacity to enforce those regulations prevents widespread safety assurance and leads to chronic exposure. Furthermore, the establishment of aflatoxin regulations will have limited effects on protecting health in the region, as many farmers grow grains and groundnuts for their own consumption. The solutions to this problem therefore need to be holistic and to examine the multiple dimensions of the problem and the specific characteristics of African supply chains.

New study quantifies aflatoxin exposure in Kenya

New study quantifies aflatoxin exposure in Kenya | Technology R &D, Transfer, Commercialization and the Food Value Chain-- for Enhanced Food Security, Nutrition, Health and Economic Development | Scoop.it
In the past few weeks, I've been doing some reading on aflatoxins to keep myself updated with recent research on this subject, with a particular focus on Kenya. I came across a recent study on huma...
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

Here is a synopsis of the Abstract of the Published Research PAper

Aflatoxins contaminate approximately 25% of agricultural products worldwide. They cause liver failure and liver cancer. Kenya has experienced multiple aflatoxicosis outbreaks in recent years, often resulting in fatalities. However, the full extent of aflatoxin exposure in Kenya has been unknown.

Their objective was to quantify aflatoxin exposure across Kenya, and analysed aflatoxin levels in serum specimens from the 2007 Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey – a nationally representative, cross-sectional serosurvey from a collection of 15,853 blood specimens.

a  random selection of 600 specimens was analysed.

Results detected serum aflatoxin B1-lysine in 78% of serum specimens (range = <LOD–211 pg/mg albumin, median = 1.78 pg/mg albumin). Aflatoxin exposure did not vary by sex, age group, marital status, religion or socioeconomic characteristics.

Aflatoxin exposure varied by province (p < 0.05); it was highest in Eastern (median = 7.87 pg/mg albumin) and Coast (median = 3.70 pg/mg albumin) provinces and lowest in Nyanza (median = <LOD) and Rift Valley (median = 0.70 pg/mg albumin) provinces.

Findings suggest that aflatoxin exposure is a public health problem throughout Kenya, and it could be substantially impacting human health. Wide-scale, evidence-based interventions are urgently needed to decrease exposure and subsequent health effects.

Early this month regional traders raised the alarm over contaminated maize and nuts during the fifth African grain trade summit in Mombasa.
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

The Threat of exposure to Aflatoxin is at a critical level.

Corn, peanuts and grains are affected.

Early this month regiojnal traders raised the alarm

over contaminated maize and nuts during the fifth African grain trade summit in Mombasa. “Due to the incidence of aflaxotin in nuts from Kenya and Uganda, we are seeing more processors choosing to import from outside the region and the small scale farmers end up abandoning their only source of livelihood,” said Mr Masila. Weak monitoring of the safety of the grain being traded, allowing informal channels to expose consumers to the harmful effects of high levels of aflatoxin, was top of their list of concerns. Studies show that 78% of Kenyans are exposed to AflatoxinB1.

The beauty of the technology is that it is applicable for use throughout the industry and all peanut processing plants that cannot afford expensive electronic sorters or their maintainance. Small-, medium- and micro-industries, including those at the farm and village level, as well as households can effectively remove aflatoxin contaminated kernels so that the rew material used for processing peanut products with below 4 ppb, the EC limit in peanut products.

A new study in the Journal of Nutrition concludes that overall mortality was reduced by 30% in participants who had rich-polyphenol diets (>650 mg/day) in comparison with the participants who had low-polyphenol intakes (<500 mg/day).

Raúl Zamora Ros, first author of the study, points out that “results corroborate scientific evidence suggesting that people consuming diets rich in fruit and vegetables are at LOWER risk of several chronic diseases and overall mortality”.

The research stresses the importance of evaluating —if possible— food intake by using nutritional biomarkers, not only food frequency questionnaires. One such biomarker is the TUP for Total Urinary Polyphenol.
