Do bacteria age? Biologists discover the answer follows simple economics

Do bacteria age? Biologists discover the answer follows simple economics | FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS | Scoop.it

When a bacterial cell divides into two daughter cells and those two cells divide into four more daughters, then 8, then 16 and so on, the result, biologists have long assumed, is an eternally youthful population of bacteria. But a new study concludes that not only do bacteria age, but that their ability to age allows bacteria to improve the evolutionary fitness of their population by diversifying their reproductive investment between older and more youthful daughters.

Gut instinct: Tantalising evidence that intestinal bacteria can influence mood

Gut instinct: Tantalising evidence that intestinal bacteria can influence mood | FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS | Scoop.it

A small but growing body of evidence suggests that bacteria dwelling in the gut can affect the brain, too, and thereby influence an individual’s mood and behaviour. The most recent paper on the topic, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reports (like much of the research in this field) on results in mice.

What’s living in your fridge?

What’s living in your fridge? | FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS | Scoop.it

Storing perishable foods at cold temperatures may slow their demise, but eventually spoilage still sets in. What makes some foods perishable is their ability to provide food and shelter for various species bacteria and fungi. While you’re flipping through recipe books to plan your next meal, these microorganisms are already eating the ingredients. They’re quite tiny, of course, so at first you don’t notice that you’re sharing your food...

The New Generation of Microbe Hunters: Bacterial Genome Sequencing Offers Latest Tool Against Diseases

The New Generation of Microbe Hunters: Bacterial Genome Sequencing Offers Latest Tool Against Diseases | FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS | Scoop.it

It was Tuesday evening, June 7. A frightening outbreak of food-borne bacteria was killing dozens of people in Germany and sickening hundreds. And the five doctors having dinner at Da Marco Cucina e Vino, a restaurant in Houston, could not stop talking about it.

What would they do if something like that happened in Houston? Suppose a patient came in, dying of a rapidly progressing infection of unknown origin? How could they figure out the cause and prevent an epidemic? They talked for hours, finally agreeing on a strategy.

Bacterial nanowires conduct like metals - physicsworld.com

Bacterial nanowires conduct like metals - physicsworld.com | FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS | Scoop.it

Bacterial nanowires are produced naturally by some bacteria and are about 3–5 nm wide and up to tens of micrometres long. The filaments bind bacteria together into clumps called microbial biofilms. The researchers measured electrical conductivities in the wires of around 5 mS cm–1, which is comparable to those of synthetic organic metallic nanostructures that are commonly used in the electronics industry.
