Hopes Rise for Global Food Security As World's Largest Agricultural Research Partnership Marks Major Milestone - Doubles Funding to $1 Billion in Five Years | Food Situation - globally | Scoop.it

CGIAR, the world's largest agriculture research partnership, today announced its funding has doubled from $500 million in 2008 to $1 billion in 2013. Officials say harvesting the fruits of this historic commitment could, among other benefits, lift 150 million people in Asia out of poverty by boosting rice production, provide 12 million African households with sustainable irrigation, save 1.7 million hectares of forest from destruction, and give 50 million poor people access to highly nutritious food crops.

FAO warns of potential food security crisis as security situation in the Central African Republic worsens | Food Situation - globally | Scoop.it

Rome, 31 December - Despite security challenges in half of the prefectures, farmers in the Central African Republic are counting on the next agriculture season to restore their food production capacity to avoid risks of famine and malnutrition. Since last year when they had to flee the violence, farming communities had to abandon their fields along the main roads to replant deep in the bush. This disruption lead them to produce much less than previous years with a major impact on their food reserves that will last till February instead of July.
