Romans downplayed Booker's attempt to destigmatize this program when she claimed that food stamps aren't meant to be people's only source of food when in fact, millions need the program for that exact reason.

The Navajo Nation started taxing junk food and soda. No other tribe has passed such a law. But half of the tribe is unemployed and say they can't afford expensive food.

I admire the Navajo Nation for their gutsiness in taking on this issue. The article cites a survey that found 80% of the food in Navajo grocery stories would be categorized as junk food. That is marketing run amok.

 

Big Food loves to push health-undermining edible food-like substances and cries "Nanny State!!!" when any government entity pushes back. If the Navajo Nation sticks to its principles on this, they could become a model for responsible action on behalf of consumers rather than industry.

Passive smoking isn't only something that people have to cope with, but plants too. This is because some plants are actually able to take up nicotine from cigarette smoke, while others that grow in contaminated soil absorb it via the roots as well. This might explain why high concentrations of nicotine are often found in spices, herbal teas and medicinal plants, despite the fact that this alkaloid is no longer permitted in insecticides.
