Man’s best friend has a pretty good handle on “episodic memory,” the ability to recall random, often non-essential life events, researchers said.

“We suggest that dogs might provide a new non-human animal model to study the complexity of … (of remembering) context-rich events, especially because of their evolutionary and developmental advantage to live in human social groups,” according to Claudia Fugazza, an animal behavior researcher in Hungary, writing in the journal Current Biology.

Fugazza’s team trained dogs to do simple, but unfamiliar tasks such as looking inside a bucket, tapping an umbrella, putting hands on a chair.

Researchers found that these dogs were consistently able to remember these disparate, unconnected actions an hour later.

To put it in human terms, Fugazza explained: “If you ask a dog to imitate an action that was demonstrated sometime ago, then it is something like asking, 'Do you remember what your owner did?'”
