Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
This article mentions food and the Arab Spring. I do believe food is and will be an increasing issue. The Arab Spring was heavily based on the unemployment, under employment and low salaries of people. This largely affects the younger generation in Arabia just like many countries in Europe, Asia and North America as well. This too will be an increasing problem as technology, industrial farming and the population expand. The Arabs just had less of a voice and demanded to change things to be heard. I'm sure we will see this also increase in Arab and other oppressed countries. People in the USA have a voice and often are too uninformed or apathetic to use their voice. Americans need to use their voice well right now because it appears as we watched the Occupy Street protest shut down with the fine coordination of a well tuned orchestra that America too may be well on it's way to oppression if the citizens don't push back early.
Many of Egypt’s young and those of many other countries too are having to live abroad for very low paying jobs and in those places they have even less of a voice in both countries when they are on guest work visas. They want to come home and have a job that pays a living. The military in many countries is yet another place many (and really most) go to find good employment. The military is increasingly less likely to hire large masses of soldiers unless the goal is to use them to oppress The country's own people. This is why China is adding more “police” and the USA it appears is building a large homeland security and constructing other deals that run outside of the traditional Rule of Law and the Constitution. There will soon be three new ways to shut down or use warrantless spying on Americans as they communicate over technology. This will be allowed without citizens realizing or being informed or giving consent to this warrantless investigation.
Food, water and healthy soil and air sustain all life. It’s time we give added value to that and redistribute wealth as a reward for taking care of those things and each other, not controlling and owning them. That would involve a major do over of our value system but it seems the time has come we must make that change or see unrest and worse as a result of increased needs combined with oppression.
