Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food - Food Revolution Network Blog

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food - Food Revolution Network Blog | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

The Bt corn and soya plants that are now everywhere in our environment are registered as insecticides. But are these insecticidal plants regulated and have their proteins been tested for safety? Not by the federal departments in charge of food safety, not in Canada and not in the U.S.

There are no long-term feeding studies performed in these countries to demonstrate the claims that engineered corn and soya are safe. All we have are scientific studies out of Europe and Russia, showing that rats fed engineered food die prematurely.

These studies show that proteins produced by engineered plants are different than what they should be. Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing that engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This goes into some details about why this GMO scientist has changed his mind on the dangers of GMOs.

Global Bioplastics Market - Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, And Forecast, 2012 - 2018 on Environmental Expert | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Bioplastics are a type of plastic manufactured from biomass sources such as vegetable oils and certain starches and are also called biobased plastic or ... (Global Bioplastics Market - Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends ...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is an article about making plastics from new plants rather than dead ones from thousands of years ago. I thought this was interesting. I was not aware of this type of plastic product or maybe just wasn't thinking about where plastic comes from other than oil wells.

I have several different reactions to this. One is...  Wow I'm eating things that make this plastic. I rarely thought about that when plastics came from oil out of the ground way below. That oil actually started as live plants and animals too when you think about it in the broader since.

Another concern would be which is more important to grow the vegetation for food and habitat or to run cars and make plastics that seem to rarely biodegrade well?

Could we just get serious about recycling plastics and that way keep them out of the ocean and land fields and also not need to continue to use up habitat and food acres just to make fresh what we have been throwing out often after using it for ten minutes to drink some water, hold some trash or prevent drips from leaky babies?

The other question I think about a lot and this begs the same question too, is how can people earn a living without money? How do we make a living and live in a way that does not require using up all our planet's resources and our time on earth to go to work to have money. This does not mean that I don't like working, because I do and very much too. There is just much work that I have to squeeze in and many seem never to get time or energy to even do that. I think working with your own home, family, friends, for your own fitness, working to learn new skills or expand old talents and interest or even read often are all work as well. I rarely see work as a negative thing when it's balanced, which these days for many it does not seem to be. These other very important jobs should not be put off till the kids have gone and our friends, family, are gone, and our homes are so neglected in many ways and I'm not speaking of just cleaning and landscaping.  We don't need to be waiting till we retire and are often too old or used up to do these very important jobs in life that often cost rather than pay.

There will never be enough jobs for everyone even if everyone is smart enough to do them, so unless we are planning to kick things back to the middle ages and continue to fight lots of wars, let sick people die from curable illnesses...So what now and with that in mind how do we redesign our lives and living for the 22nd century and on and start that life in the 21st right now?

Tupelo organic farmer loses crop to herbicide drift
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is a loss to all of us! How can we make this stop? When this is drfting enough to affect unintended targets on someone else's land think where else the drift is traveling. When someone can't keep thier property or "patented " designer plants contain that company and other farmer needs to be held accountable for all losses, clean-up and contamination. Then stripped of their ablity to continue to do damage or face jail.

GMOs: A Breakthrough or Breakdown in U.S. Agriculture?

GMOs: A Breakthrough or Breakdown in U.S. Agriculture? | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Deciphering the debate on genetically-engineered food.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Here's a more pro-GMO take on the topic that tries to be objective. I still think all patenting of the living needs to stop.  Then we would see if mankind values or willingly accepts these alterations. A baby sitter doesn't own a child because they feed it. A teacher doesn't own student because the teacher help shape or design the growth of that student, A bee keeper owns a bee, a pet owner owns a pet and so forth only as long as that creatures allows it to be so. Living creatures that connect together in nature do so because they sustain each other or one must consume the other.

The parent does own a child because they feed it either. Living things are belong only to themselves. If we are eating and injesting something what ever it is, the one who alters it must be completely open and honest about exactly what they changed and why and have my permission to place this inside of me.

When it comes to deliberatly altering life we don't need to allow company secrets. Life affects another life. No secrete! No patents! And label clearly just what was changed and how and why! Because they knew we would not accept the altered food? We would if we saw a reason to and I see none.

GM wheat could permanently damage human genetics by silencing hundreds of genes throughout the body

GM wheat could permanently damage human genetics by silencing hundreds of genes throughout the body | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
GM wheat could permanently damage human genetics by silencing hundreds of genes throughout the body
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

There seems to be no halting the gate opened back in the 80s when GE got the first approval to patent a microorganism. There are 3 billion acres of GMOs now and growing rapidly in just 2 to 3 decades without ever making the news or the front page. If another country or alien had landed in our country and started doing what these companies are doing without our direct informed consent or knowledge, and our elected and appointed officials are allowing to occur in our food chain and natural environment, we would be getting out our tanks and guns to fight the "ENEMY".

I'm going to say this out loud. I have a hard time feeling sorry or worried for at least two of the officials’ receiving poison laced mail attempts. I have contacted Wicker and Obama on fact that I'm shocked I had to find out what was in my and my families food for over a decade of feeding it to my family without full disclosure of what had changed. I never heard anything first from them or mass media. I pay both of them and the media to not only make choices for my best interest but to also keep me informed about what “I” want and need to know. I told both these men directly they DO NOT have my approval or permission to neither alter my food nor present it unlabeled so that it can not be identified for me and others to easily avoid.

Wicker wrote back to say it was too difficult, expensive and complicated to deal with labeling and indicated no willingness at all to stop direct poison sprayed directly to plants we eat or fed the animals we then consume or to prevent internalizing of GMO DNA pesticides what so ever. Both of these are poisons these two men promote, support, and encourage for the consumption of uninformed masses. Why then are we worried, spending a dime, or planning to give another man a life sentence in jail for sending some poison on an article they would not even be having for dinner to the same two men that think it’s OK to serve the entire world poison without their knowledge or consent? Why is their poisoning our problem if our poisoning isn’t their problem and these two men had a direct choice not to allow our poisoning? These to men are willfully choosing to poison us and no one is planning to arrest them or send them to jail. Instead of jail we pay them a salary to work for us and provide them with lifetime “ENTITLEMENTS” once known as benefits or deferred earnings.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I remember bats always flying around catching things at dusk in Kentucky as a child. I don't hardly ever see bats these days, not in Kentucky or in Mississippi or most others places I've lived. Sad how something like that can quietly go out of your life and you barely notice till you look and realize how much and how quickly something’s change. I've read where bats are far better at ridding communities of mosquitoes than spaying the air in front of my porch.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is about something called spice...That can kill on first use.

Ecerpt:

SAFE Coalition member DeeDe Crigler said she will testify about the dangers of the alternative drugs at Monday’s city council meeting, along with at least three other members of the group.

“People are dying with first-time use of synthetic drugs,” Crigler said. “Some of the chemicals make them 50 times stronger than marijuana and they’re packaging them just like candy.”

Crigler said one of her teenage daughter’s friends bought a package of them at a local liquor store accidentally, believing they were the popular candy “Pop Rocks.”

“There’s no age limit for who can purchase them,” Crigler said.

Calls to nationwide Poison Control Centers for exposure to spice increased from 2,915 to 6, 959 in 2011, according to a fact sheet distributed by the SAFE Coalition. And federal regulations only ban the chemicals within the drugs, according to Crigler, allowing the producers to make minor alterations and keep them lawfully on the market.
