Biotechs say they can control their GMO crops and not allow them to overtake conventional crops. Are they going to design giant poop scoopers  or shoot all the birds their crops didn't already kill by killing their insect food? Maybe they will send the birds the bill for planting without a contract and not paying Monsanto for the seeds.

Amid protests Monsanto drops plans to boost GM seeds sales in EU

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

In the EU people realize their voice don't stand a chance of being heard unless they raise them up and take a stand! Guess where the giant biotech plan to grow their wares ....yes The dear old USA where mmost people still don't know what a GMO is and it's somebody else's job to stand up againt it if it is bad. Trusting Monsantos people in official positions to do the right thing by consumers...ask the soldier sprayed with agant orange how that went for them,,..of course you may have to go to the grave yard to do it starting in their 40s through 60s they and their off spring have been dropping like flies.

Isn't it nice of the American citizens to volunteer to be and let their children and grandchildren be Monsanto and other biotech's human test subjects. Not a very scientific test at all though...No one even keeps track of what we are being fed, how much, what mixture, how much is spilling into our water or ground water, how these chemicals effect the food chain among all creatures...So good luck proving anything works or doesn't from an experiment like that. The politicians right through the Bush Senior when all this started on to the current president now and nearly every congress member would get an F--- from their science 5th grade teacher in even any of the worst public schools for really bad understanding of control experiments.

Water firms raise fears over shale gas fracking - Telegraph

Water firms raise fears over shale gas fracking - Telegraph | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Fracking for shale gas will raise the risk of water shortages and could contaminate drinking supplies, Britain's water companies have claimed.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Wise, honest, considerations are raised in this article.

Excerpt:

Water UK says it is not “taking sides” over fracking but that water supplies must be protected “at all costs”, with the utilities’ own reputations on the line.

“If it goes ahead, we want to ensure corners are not cut and standards compromised, leaving us all counting the cost for years to come,” Dr Jim Marshall, the group’s policy and business adviser, said.

He called for “greater clarity from the shale gas industry on what its water needs are really going to be and a true assessment of the impacts”.

The water industry has commissioned its own report on the potential impact which shows the volumes needed presented a “real concern”.

This especially applies in the south east which is believed to have significant shale potential but is prone to water shortages.

Water UK also questions how the water will be supplied to fracking sites and suggests logistical challenges in treating waste water, which would be “toxic to bacteria used in the treatment process” and could therefore only be treated at “larger urban waste water treatment facilities”.

Water customers must not end up paying extra, it says.

June 20, 2013 BirdLife International

Declines in birds across the globe are providing evidence of a rapid deterioration in the global environment that is affecting all life on earth – including people. However, birds also tell us that saving the planet comes at a relatively small price – an investment that’s vital to secure our own future.

These are some of the messages in a new report State of the world’s birds: indicators for our changing world by the world’s largest Partnership of conservation organisations...

“Birds provide an accurate and easy to read environmental barometer that allows us to see clearly the pressures our current way of life are putting on the world’s biodiversity”, said Dr Leon Bennun, BirdLife’s Director of Science, Information and Policy.... http://www.birdlife.org/community/2013/06/birds-indicate-a-planet-in-peril-but-investing-in-conservation-makes-economic-sense/

BIOLOGICAL DESERTS: THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF THE GMO MONOCULTURE BIOFUEL AND PALM OIL INDUSTRY

The mass clearing of trees for farmland disturbs the ecosystem of the rainforest by decimating rare and exotic flora and fauna. With the planting of a single crop plantation, the natural biodiversity of the rainforest is lost. The mono-crop culture that has long-plagued environmentalists in the west displaces or destroys most of the species in a single sitting, as they are unable to adapt to living within vast acres of a single crop. The environment, habitats and species that are destroyed have lived together since the dawn of the rainforest, and the damage caused by palm oil farming is irreversible http://sco.lt/9AeHbN

Here are many links all in one place so you can start looking over the bird situation from one site. I think we all love birds when they don't leave us too many "presents" in the wrong places or wake us up too early. I certainly will lovingly accept unwanted presents if the price is to loose my feathered friends.

I personally share my yard and often my porch or deck with a peacock that decided to live at my house.  I clean-up a bit after him and he loudy lets me know when someone strange is in the yard.....And then we just walk, fly, sit and stand around watching each other do things.

David Suzuki makes valid points. Even the strongest religious and faithful people on the planet agree that all the things he speaks of were put here ahead of people. That's because they are critical for physical life. The things we have come to value are not what is truly valuable. It seems totally disrespectful to say thank you for this amazing, life sustaining, world with our unthinking destruction. Is capitalism about selling to the best bidder even if the bidder is communist and not even part of the nation? Why is capitalism worth so much if it just has a price like everything else?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1245Mog) reported that 17 groups sent a letter to theCommittee on Foreign Investment in the United States asking it to oppose the pork processor's sale to Shuanghui International Holdings Ltd.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Great list of Myths used to promote GM plantings and food.

Excerpt:

GM proponents have always claimed that GM is just an extension of natural plant breeding. This is false.

Natural reproduction or breeding can only occur between closely related forms of life (e.g. cats with cats, NOT cats with dogs; wheat with wheat, NOT wheat with tomatoes or fish). In this way, the genes that offspring inherit from parents, which carry information for all parts of the body, are passed down the generations in an orderly way.

GM is totally different. It is a laboratory technique that re-programmes the plant with completely new properties by inserting artificial gene units into its DNA blueprint (plan).

Thorium nuclear reactor trial begins, could provide cleaner, safer, almost-waste-free energy

Thorium nuclear reactor trial begins, could provide cleaner, safer, almost-waste-free energy | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

At a test site in Norway, Thor Energy has successfully created a thorium nuclear reactor — but not in the sense that most people think of when they hear the word thorium. The Norwegians haven’t solved the energy crisis and global warming in one fell swoop — they haven’t created a cold fusion thorium reactor. What they have done, though, which is still very cool, is use thorium instead of uranium in a conventional nuclear reactor. In one fell swoop, thorium fuel, which is safer, less messy to clean up, and not prone to nuclear weapons proliferation, could quench the complaints of nuclear power critics everywhere.
