Green Jobs: Hope or Hype? . NOW on PBS

What will jobs of the future look like? NOW on PBS talks with environmental activist Van Jones, founder of 'Green For All,' a group dedicated to bringing green jobs to disadvantaged Americans.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Van Jones founded Green for All back in 2007 after working to help urban area improvement for 20 years. Glenn Beck, seriously attacked him not long after this about his position, as a Green Job advisor and his advisory role to Obama in the medical insurance expansion efforts. He quickly resigned rather than sideline and distract the medical debate going on at that time. It was a loss to the American public. I can't imagine that big money sponsors at FOX would have had anything to do with that attack. I was just joking about that statement. Green for All still functions today. I didn't recognize Jones by any of Beck's fierce attacking descriptions of him.  Beck made him sound like a vandalizing, high school drop out that was arrested at the Rodney King riots in LA. I did recognize the name from the media reform movement as a Keynote speaker and Beck’s description didn’t fit at all if that was the same guy. I started to dig to see if it was the same guy and indeed it was……….Van also advised Obama on the Medical plans in the works. Beck felt he was unqualified thus leading to Beck's attacks on every level…After my researching Beck's claims about Van Jones two things happen to me. I decided that FOX was indeed the media scum I had heard it being accused of and FOX and Beck would destroy even the hard won successes of anyone like Van Jones with all the lies they could in order to shape the world to fit their needs or sponsors needs.

I also decided that Jones, the Keynote speaker that slightly offended me as a white woman by some of his direct, straight talking remarks, though what he offended with seemed also relevant enough to not get too worked up over…was also someone I had learned enough about to give him a high billing as a visionary for our future and our youth. I realized Van Jones had worked tirelessly behind the scenes for several decades and had inspired groups strong enough to be a force of their own after he moved on. I decided he was a great guy to advise the president on all sorts of social justice issues as a social justice law graduate from Yale by way of Jackson TN, UT Martin. I learned he also was not even in LA when the riots where happening, was never arrested for vandalism at the riot, and was never a felon as Beck had described him to be…and never again would I not deeply fact check FOX or Beck or would I trust them.

The attack on Jones was out and out lies and designed to mislead people as well as defamation of Jones’ character. Shortly after Van resigned Beck went on his usual attack on Obama that continues to this day. That day he decided to call Obama racist for very flakey reasons and a little known, passionate group called the Color of Change was still going strong after the founder, Jones, had moved on and still is highly active. When they heard the accusation about Obama they were furious enough to start calling Beck's sponsors and keep calling them until sponsors disappeared…nearly all of them. As Beck got more desperate so did his shows until he was delivering messages from God to his fans and flocks…Murdoch the force behind FOX at that point decided to give Beck a nice start somewhere other than FOX I noticed.

I knew Van Jones to be very active in the media reform movement as well. He was pushing for more citizen participation and ability to have citizen's own voices heard through the media of today as well as honesty on meaningful topics in media and maintaining an open net. He was also highly involved in issues of people of color and founded and inspired The Color of Change organization years earlier as well. Van's inspiration of these groups holds long after he leaves to start other endeavors. They are all are continuing today as very active groups.  Van has started, or co-started four very active and different, non-profits. I hope his current Gig on Crossfire at CNN will not bring an end to such inspirations, as he is a strong force from behind the scenes.  Many admirers didn't want Van’s effort compromised by White House or Commercial Network Gigs. However. Van, if anyone should be able to find honest ways to reach people and get people's attention and inspire them to care even in the network arena.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

People at the open house were also concerned about worst-case scenario of having a highly pressurized gas pipeline constructed through their back yards. Williams has earned some recent notoriety due to a slew of safety lapses. These included the forced evacuation of Opal, Wyoming due to a fire at a Williams’ natural gas plant on April 23, and an explosion of a liquefied natural gas storage facility at the end of March. Since 2002, Williams has had over 95 “significant” gas transmission incidents. A “significant” incident includes fatalities, injuries, leaks, fires, explosions, or damages totaling more than $50,000.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
I read the When Henry Ford designed the model T he eventually intended for the cars to be made from hemp and run on hemp oil. This might explain why he thought that could happen and also what corporate interest shot that idea down and made it even an illegal crop to grow. With our current environmental challenges it might be time to take a new look at hemp as a product. To tell you the truth I think the tall plants even look good in this film. I don't know if hemp tends to be invasive…..But if it isn't invasive it might simply be lovely to landscape with as well. I don't like smoking anything or having my mind or mood chemically altered by anything either. Nor do I like people on the road driving or even working with me or for me with an altered mind… I do love nice plants and healthy environmental solutions so I am sharing this information!

Water Cut-off in U.S. City Violates Human Rights, Say Activists | Inter Press Service

Water Cut-off in U.S. City Violates Human Rights, Say Activists | Inter Press Service | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

When the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Water visited the United States last year, Food & Water Watch wrote a report delineating violations of the human right to water and sanitation across the country, primarily in rural, Latino and immigrant, Native American and homeless communities.

Grant said water shutoffs for non-payment are one way these violations are occurring.

In Detroit and other cities, she pointed out, households can lose access to drinking water and wastewater service when they cannot afford to pay their water bills.

The few low-income assistance programmes that exist are inadequate and fail to meet the needs of struggling households, she added.
