The High Line Effect: Top 10 Urban Transformation Projects

The High Line Effect: Top 10 Urban Transformation Projects | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

Given the environmental straits we find ourselves in at present, architects and policy makers have to rethink our strategy of how to shape the city, buildings, and urban space alike.

This entails that we refrain from the tabula rasa strategies of the past and make do with the standing infrastructure that we already have. Preserving and rehabilitating the aging steel relics of our global cities has proven an ingenious way of saving energy, while enabling newer methods of architectural planning. Projects such as the High Line have kickstarted a new age of urban regeneration—for good or ill—with initiatives from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia attempting to replicate its success on their own turf.

When it comes to urban transformation, size does not matter, per se. The subtleties of thoughtful urban projects shine through at every level, and sometime outperform their more ostentatious contemporaries. The best projects spur new occupation and lively places...

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I don't want this stuff here except in a lab environment, and I sure don't want us held accountable for forcing it on the rest of the world the way these companies are serving us and our livestock an unlabled Mickey Finn. One thing depends and affects another in life and these scientist are far from having all the peices of life's puzzle working together the right way. They could make a very dangerous plan not using all the interdependent pieces and making sure they work as they should.

Then there is always the question about nature does this all for free so why would we pay some few people to play with this, and maybe even damage the balance irreversibly for many species and we might be one of those?

German farmers can't keep up with organic boom | Environment | DW.DE | 14.05.2013 | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Organic produce is a given in a lot of shops in Germany. But while demand is increasing, cultivation is lagging behind. Since Germany is failing to turn out enough organic products, many of the products must be imported.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Organic apples from Argentina, tomatoes from Spain – when looking at the assortment in German organic supermarkets, consumers are easily confused. Even though one might want to make ecologically correct and sustainable decisions when shopping, many of the fruits and vegetables have travelled a long way, leaving a considerable carbon footprint. German grocers are not just importing the exotic produce such as bananas and mangoes that are impossible to grow in Germany, but also potatoes, apples and cucumbers, as well as pork and dairy products.

Supreme Court rules for Monsanto in Indiana farmer's GM seeds case | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Justice Elena Kagan says Vernon Bowman's late-season soybean crop infringed on patent for GM soybeans (RT @BetteMidler: read last paragraph.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Should the cost of planting an acre go up 325% in less than twenty years? Is this the promised way to feed the poor or is it really meant to starve them. Poor have often survived by raising food and trading extra produce. I think all of Monsanto and other biotech companies are a curse on the planet and to mankind and all species on the planet. These companies and others have totally corrupted many national governments all the way to the top to render them basically useless to govern in the interest of the people in nearly every nation. These business and government leaders need to be sent to The Hague as individuals for crimes against all people of the planet. ….and if there is no justice left and Mob will can do it history proves and eventually the army that is always made of the masses eventually turns to take down their enemies. NO one in history has ever tried to own everything that gives life to everything else nor should that ever happen. These judges are not just if they allow inhumane laws to stand. They should have stricken down the right to patent life.

Exceprt:

The decision will be seen as a big defeat for those who had looked to Bowman's case to challenge the growing power over modern farming that is wielded by giant agricultural and biotech firms. By the start of this year, Monsanto had filed 144 lawsuits against 466 farmers and small farm businesses alleging patent infringement, according to a report from the Centre for Food Safety which has championed Bowman's case.

The report noted that three big companies now control more than half of the global seed market – a position that has sent prices soaring. The report said the average cost of planting an acre of soybeans had risen 325% between 1995 and 2011.

Organic Consumers Association Calls on Congress to Reject King Amendment and Any Other Farm Bill Riders That Would Preempt State GMO Labeling Laws - eNews Park Forest | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
“If Monsanto can’t stop states from passing laws, then the next step is a national preemptive measure,” Cummins said. “And all signs point to just such a power grab.” Organic Consumers Association (OCA) today called on all members of Congress to reject the King Amendment and any other amendments or riders to the 2013 Farm Bill that would take away states’ rights to enact laws requiring the labeling of foods...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

“If the King Amendment survives, and is included in the 2013 Farm Bill, it will wipe out more than 150 state laws governing agriculture, food and food safety,” said Ronnie Cummins, National Director of the OCA. “The biotech industry knows that it’s only a matter of time before Washington State, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut and other states pass GMO labeling laws. Rather than fight this battle in every state, Monsanto is trying to manipulate Congress to pass a Farm Bill that will wipe out citizens’ rights to state laws intended to protect their health and safety.”

The King Amendment, inserted into the Farm Bill under the guise of protecting interstate commerce, passed out of the House Agricultural Committee on Wednesday, May 15. IThe amendment was proposed by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), largely in response to a California law stating that by 2015, California will allow only eggs to be sold from hens housed in cages specified by California. But policy analysts emphasize that the amendment, broadly and ambiguously written, could be used to prohibit or preempt any state GMO labeling or food safety law.

How can we ignore the cause, effects, and the cost of #ClimateChange? Look at the lives, #homes & #environment lost. http://t.co/5hXXmxLnVd
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

"Pick any city, any industry, any business, any government and you will find that most of the spending on climate change comes after the disaster, not in anticipation of it. The U.S. Congress authorized more than $60-billion to pay for Hurricane Sandy’s damage last year. In other words, there is no hedging for volatility.

Take agriculture. Farmers are well aware that climate change is turning their growing and harvesting seasons into crap shoots because of the alarming frequency of droughts, floods and extreme cold and heat. The drought of 2012 in the United States, one of the worst on record, slaughtered corn and soybean yields in the Midwest. Suppose that were to happen again, choking off agricultural exports. Food shortages could develop in some countries or regions, including Canada, if the drought were severe north of the border.

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food - Food Revolution Network Blog | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

The Bt corn and soya plants that are now everywhere in our environment are registered as insecticides. But are these insecticidal plants regulated and have their proteins been tested for safety? Not by the federal departments in charge of food safety, not in Canada and not in the U.S.

There are no long-term feeding studies performed in these countries to demonstrate the claims that engineered corn and soya are safe. All we have are scientific studies out of Europe and Russia, showing that rats fed engineered food die prematurely.

These studies show that proteins produced by engineered plants are different than what they should be. Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing that engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins.

Global Bioplastics Market - Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, And Forecast, 2012 - 2018 on Environmental Expert | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Bioplastics are a type of plastic manufactured from biomass sources such as vegetable oils and certain starches and are also called biobased plastic or ... (Global Bioplastics Market - Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends ...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is an article about making plastics from new plants rather than dead ones from thousands of years ago. I thought this was interesting. I was not aware of this type of plastic product or maybe just wasn't thinking about where plastic comes from other than oil wells.

I have several different reactions to this. One is...  Wow I'm eating things that make this plastic. I rarely thought about that when plastics came from oil out of the ground way below. That oil actually started as live plants and animals too when you think about it in the broader since.

Another concern would be which is more important to grow the vegetation for food and habitat or to run cars and make plastics that seem to rarely biodegrade well?

Could we just get serious about recycling plastics and that way keep them out of the ocean and land fields and also not need to continue to use up habitat and food acres just to make fresh what we have been throwing out often after using it for ten minutes to drink some water, hold some trash or prevent drips from leaky babies?

The other question I think about a lot and this begs the same question too, is how can people earn a living without money? How do we make a living and live in a way that does not require using up all our planet's resources and our time on earth to go to work to have money. This does not mean that I don't like working, because I do and very much too. There is just much work that I have to squeeze in and many seem never to get time or energy to even do that. I think working with your own home, family, friends, for your own fitness, working to learn new skills or expand old talents and interest or even read often are all work as well. I rarely see work as a negative thing when it's balanced, which these days for many it does not seem to be. These other very important jobs should not be put off till the kids have gone and our friends, family, are gone, and our homes are so neglected in many ways and I'm not speaking of just cleaning and landscaping.  We don't need to be waiting till we retire and are often too old or used up to do these very important jobs in life that often cost rather than pay.

There will never be enough jobs for everyone even if everyone is smart enough to do them, so unless we are planning to kick things back to the middle ages and continue to fight lots of wars, let sick people die from curable illnesses...So what now and with that in mind how do we redesign our lives and living for the 22nd century and on and start that life in the 21st right now?
