KEARNEY — Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is helping build a business bridge between Nebraska and China’s huge, developing market for consumer goods.
Nadine Touzet's insight:

“China does not accept U.S. beef, but here in Nebraska we must compete with them for our feed resources because the U.S. exports a lot of feed (grains) to China,” said Nebraska Cattlemen Executive Vice President Michael Kelsey.

Paulson said some of the beef import rules in China and other countries are “the protectionist measures of choice,” but some reflect strong feelings about food safety issues.

Genetically-modified – or GM – wheat, often called "Roundup resistant" because it withstands the herbicide glyphosate produced by Monsanto, has not been approved for commercial planting.

Le producteur qui a trouvé du blé résistant au glyphosate dans ses champs s'est dit "très choqué" par cette découverte. Malgré les implications négatives de cette situation sur les exportations de blé américain, les autres producteurs de la région estiment qu'il a fait ce qu'il fallait faire : déclarer l'anomalie aux autorités.
