Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made around the town of Montalcino. Brunello is a rough translation of “nice dark one”. Brunello is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. There are aging requirements that dictate that Brunello di Montalcino is to be aged in oak for 2 years and then, at least 4 months in a bottle before hitting the market. Winemakers can face imprisonment for commercial fraud if they don’t follow the rules. Brunello di Montalcino is very popular in the U.S. It is one of the most popular wines ordered at a restaurant. Brunello have aromas of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, leather and violets with more fleshy textures. Often compared to Pinot Noir wines of Burgundy with ripe, smooth tannins, Brunello di Montalcino are unique to the region.
