Introduction to 'Thinking at the Edge'

The Focusing Institute Gendlin Online Library: Introduction to 'Thinking at the Edge'...

TAE stems from my course called "Theory Construction" which I taught for many years at the University of Chicago. Students came to it from many fields. The course consisted half of philosophy and logic, half of the difficult task of getting students to attend to what they implicitly knew but could not say and never considered trying to say. It took weeks to explain that the usual criteria were reversed in my course. Whereas everywhere else in the University only what was clear counted at all, here we cared only about what was as yet unclear. If it was clear I said "We don't need you for this; we have it in the library already." Our students were not used to the process we call "FOCUSING," spending time with an observation or impression which is directly and physically sensed, but unclear. All educated people "know" such things in their field of study. Sometimes such a thing can feel deeply important, but typically people assume that it "makes no sense" and cannot be said or thought into.

Thinking at the edge: developing soft creativity Guy Claxton * University of Bristol, UK

Thinking at the edge: developing soft creativity Guy Claxton * University of Bristol, UK | focusing_gr | Scoop.it
Creativity in education often takes the form of concentrated periods of arts-based ‘light relief’ from
the rigours of the National Curriculum. In psychology, on the other hand, creativity is often
associated with a dramatic moment of ‘illumination’ in solving scientific, mathematical or practical
problems. This paper explores a third approach called ‘thinking at the edge’ (TATE) that is based
on a therapeutic practice called ‘focusing’ devised by American philosopher Eugene Gendlin.
TATE involves learning the knack of delicate inward attention to a somatic process of ‘epistemic
evolution’, in which hazy, pre-conceptual ideas are given time to unfold into novel forms of talking
and thinking. Particular forms of exploratory writing and exploratory conversation contribute to
this evolutionary process. It is argued that TATE forms a useful addition to the expanding suite of
‘positive learning dispositions’ that lie at the heart of learning to learn; constitutes a corrective to an
over-rationalistic approach to teaching ‘thinking skills’, and offers a clear example of how learning
dispositions may potentially be cultivated in educational settings.

TAE, like Focusing, is a practice developed from Eugene Gendlin’s Philosophy of the
Implicit. TAE is an innovative way of expression, through speaking, thinking and
writing from your ’ felt sense’. We each use our learned language(s) to communicate
our everyday living situations within our socio-economic-political contexts; and we
also use the same language to express our feelings, emotions, dreams, intuitive
senses and personal meanings. Still, is our learned language proficient enough to
sufficiently communicate these many and varied aspects of our lives? Are you
continuously searching for the right words, expressions, and ways to communicate
what you really feel or want to say or think? ....

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΚΕΝΤΡΟ Focusing: TAE Workshop with Nada Lou

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΚΕΝΤΡΟ Focusing: TAE Workshop with Nada Lou | focusing_gr | Scoop.it

The week-end 16-18 September,
it was eventually held the TAE Workshop with Nada Lou.

The impressions and feelings of this exceptionally resourceful experience are just splendid! To begin with, allow us to note that some of us had previously attended, in the Focusing Internationals, TAE presentations and had been excited by its sparkling quality, but what we experienced this week-end was “something more”…
Nada Lou opened up for us, under a most tentative, informative, revealing and effective manner, a new brilliant chapter of Focusing, which though it is quite distinct from it, it does enrich our attachment to it.
It might sound extreme but right from the first hours
(we commenced late Friday afternoon and finished Sunday noon)
a lot of the participants had caught this feeling of something special going on… Something really unique was occurring…
Nada’s Lou deep, methodical and systematic knowledge of the field, plus her modest and kind presence led us to work with teenager’s zeal, single-minded to the process and finally enjoy very fruitful outcomes.

Thank you Nada!
We did really benefit immensely from your charisma!
