Beneficiary designations for IRAs (which govern who will inherit the account when you pass away) can be very tricky, if you name someone other than your spouse as a primary beneficiary (or even as contingent beneficiaries, if your spouse predeceases you). If your IRA passes to a spouse, it is usually protected from creditor claims. But it appears that inherited IRAs that pass to non-spouses (children or other relatives) are now more vulnerable than we thought.

The cost to attend a 4-year public college or university in the United States increased by nearly 3% for the 2013-14 academic year according to data collected by the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center. College costs for tuition and fees rose from an average of $18,557 in 2012-13 to $19,080 in 2013-14. When you include room, board, and other costs associated with school, the full price tag rose from $25,757 to $26,535. For private colleges and universities, the cost is yet higher.
