Via libera agli affittacamere. La sharing economy non è più il nemico da combattere per il Governo regionale catalano, che a sorpresa ha deciso di autorizzare l'affitto di stanze ai turisti nelle case private. Una pratica già enormemente diffusa, ma finora fuori controllo e ai margini della legalità: secondo un recente studio di Exceltur, a Barcellona l'offerta di posti letto da parte di privati cittadini (sia con annunci individuali, sia attraverso le piattaforme online più conosciute come Airbnb) era arrivata a raddoppiare quella degli appartamenti turistici regolarmente autorizzati: 137.196 posti contro 78.402.

The big hotel brands can do a lot more to elevate the whole “local” trend by recommending apps and web-based platforms that guide guests to local neighborhoods, just like Airbnb hosts do.

The concept of the next generation hotel acting as a hyper-connected knowledge hub in its immediate community is compelling, but for the most part unrealized. The industry has talked at length about the potential role of hotels as gateways into their neighborhood, but in reality, it’s been mostly actualized via hotel associates acting as insider sources, partnerships with local restaurant/bar owners, and maybe a generic list on a hotel website somewhere. That was interesting five years ago.

While most people tune into the big Superbowl game to watch two teams compete for the ultimate trophy in football, nerds like me tune in and watch all the marketing and branding moves being made. It’s amazing what we can learn about trends in marketing by watching a huge production like the Superbowl. So – in case you are like most Americans and you were watching with a focus on the game, I thought I would share the event marketing lessons I picked up along the way last night.

HUMAN TOUCH
There has been a debate raging in the events industry over the past few years about whether or not technology is ruining live events. As more and more people are able to connect via social media and other forms of technology, perhaps there is less of a need for an in-person interaction. I have never believed this, but I feel that the commercials aired last night only prove the point that people are craving human interaction. Many of the commercials viewed during the big game touched a chord with people because they were showing love, compassion and generosity. I think we are all looking for a bit more of those 3 things in our lives so it’s exciting to see how that plays out for us. In the events industry, leveraging our power to connect people on an ongoing basis is something that should not be underestimated. And, as you approach your marketing plan for your next event, consider how you can appeal to this longing in your audience.

How you measure up? What data do you collect, track, monitor? What do you use? Why do you use it and how do you respond?

I love how good business intelligence, fed by strong data, allows me to present meaningful information that can help an organization move in the right direction. I learned the discipline working for a Starwood property, then applied it at Maritz Travel in the meeting environment. At one point, I was leading a team of about 10 business analysts, and, as data nerds, we decided to create a Top 10 List of Data Management Tips. (I doubt very much David Letterman has covered this one.) We created this list in the context of strategic meetings management programs, but these rules can be applied to other environments.
