The competitive push toward mobile payment

The competitive push toward mobile payment | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Michael Darnaud, CEO of i-Cue Design, proposed a solution this week for one of the major problems with mobile shopping: speed, or lack thereof. In a post at Mobile Commerce Daily, he says the steps to a purchase simply take too long because of the number of data transfers involved:

"Just clicking a button to 'add,' 'delete' or 'change quantity' on the mobile Web requires sending transaction data from the shopper's mobile device to the vendor's server — average three to five seconds — via cell towers, not high-speed cables. These interim steps, long before checking out, are the challenge — it is all about time."

VeriFone to Clash With Square on Micro-Merchant Market

VeriFone to Clash With Square on Micro-Merchant Market | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

VeriFone Systems Inc. (PAY), the largest maker of credit-card terminals, will offer an attachment that lets mobile devices accept credit and debit cards, making a deeper push into a market pioneered by Square Inc. and EBay Inc. (EBAY)’s PayPal.

Like Square, the current leader in the small-business payment processing market, VeriFone will offer a matchbox-sized attachment for mobile devices made by Apple Inc. (AAPL) or those that feature Google Inc.’s Android software to merchants for free. VeriFone’s version will allow partners such as banks to customize the service to transmit coupons and loyalty points to consumers, said Greg Cohen, a senior vice president at San Jose, California-based VeriFone.

Isis bolsters its mobile wallet with American Express cards

Isis bolsters its mobile wallet with American Express cards | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

The carrier-backed Isis mobile payment service added a batch of new financial partners earlier this year, and it's now back with another fairly big addition. The venture announced today that it has brought American Express' various credit card offerings into the fold (including the company's own mobile-linked Serve cards), which will let users of those cards load them into the Isis app and make payments with their NFC-equipped smartphone -- when the service begins its rollout this summer, that is. As you may recall, American Express itself had already signed on as an Isis partner last year, but this is the first time that the company has committed to tying its cards to the platform -- which is a rather important little detail.

Google developing an iOS-like Game Center for Android

Google developing an iOS-like Game Center for Android | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Google is working on a native Android app similar to Game Center, an app on the iPhone that connects players in most of Apple's iOS games, according to a source familiar with the plans.

One more area where Google is imitating Apple, according to our source: Fixing the payments system for Google Play, the online store where players buy Android games and other apps, to make it as smooth as buying games in the App Store. That's been a big reason why Android developers make less money than those who build apps for Apple's iOS devices.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment.

The Great Tablet Flood

The Great Tablet Flood | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Consumers were flooded with a torrent of new tablet options in 2011. With over 40 tablets available on a handful of platforms only a few can stand out. We’ll attempt to break down what we saw, highlight what’s working and point the way forward.

Apple’s new iPad will help them keep their lead but there is a lot of growth left before the market matures. Google, showed a firm commitment to tablets last year, delivering two solid tablet OS updates to Android. The manufacturers got on board: most new tablets ran Android. Then there’s Microsoft which did not have a tablet in the market in 2011, but they have just released their next-generation Windows 8, with UI innovation and an approach to apps that bets on tablets and the touchscreen interfaces that drive them.

Facebook is getting its own app store for all devices, all platforms, all prices

Facebook is getting its own app store for all devices, all platforms, all prices | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Facebook is launching a new App Center, “a place to find social web, desktop, and mobile apps” — and not just Facebook apps.

The App Center will bring Facebook’s 900 million users all the best in iOS apps, Android apps, web apps, mobile web apps, and even desktop apps. “The goal is to solve the app discovery problem… based on what you and your friends enjoy,” a Facebook rep told VentureBeat in a phone chat today.

You won’t just find free apps here, either. Facebook is also introducing paid apps. The company stated it expects in-app purchases to be developers’ primary money-makers for the time being; however, making paid apps available through the Facebook platform is the beginning of a very interesting business opportunity, both for devs and for Facebook.

Facebook tells us it is not competing directly with Apple or Google. The App Center will send traffic to both the iOS and Android platforms. If, for example, you’re browsing Facebook’s App Center on your Android and you click a link for a plant/zombie game, you’ll be taken to that app’s Google Play page to install it.

note! According to the developer page "To grow your mobile app through the App Center, your app needs to use Facebook Login."

It's Apple vs. Google vs. Everyone In The Mobile Payments War - Forbes

It's Apple vs. Google vs. Everyone In The Mobile Payments War - Forbes | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Consumer and merchant adoption of contactless technology is currently at a standstill. Visa and Mastercard need Apple to break the logjam, lest innovators like Dwolla and Starbucks continue to gain traction for payment solutions that circumvent Visa and MasterCard altogether. So long as the iWallet makes it easy to load existing cards, and ties into the existing payment networks through NFC, Visa and Mastercard should see interchange revenue grow. The payment networks won’t control the mobile wallet itself, but they will benefit nonetheless.

The Wildcard: The Merchant Consortium

It’s notoriously hard to predict the future of mobile payments, and there’s one wildcard to make it even more difficult: the merchants. They have an enormous amount at stake. The interchange comes out of their bottom line. They are the ones who will pay for the ads and promotions linked to the mobile wallet. Even the cost of upgrading the payment terminals to accept tap-to-pay will be borne by the merchants. If acceptance of the mobile wallet becomes business as usual, merchants may prove to be the losers.

CloudOn Launch | startup | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

CEO CloudOn: "I had a smartphone, a PC, a Mac and a netbook. And, while these were great devices on their own, none of them actually worked together to help me be productive. I found myself with different files and applications on different machines. I had to email files back and forth to get my data and buy application licenses for each device."

CloudOn brings Microsoft Office to your tablet. All of it. Of course you can format text, change fonts and catch that typo, but imagine being able to track changes while editing Word documents, use pivot tables and insert formulas in Excel and present your PowerPoint slides complete with transitions.

Author: Although it looks like another cloud store service, CloudOn doesnt store anything on their own servers but they only function like a generalized proxy for the main cloud stores like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc..

Ad network data shows Kindle Fire usage slowing down

Ad network data shows Kindle Fire usage slowing down | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

According to a story from TechCrunch, JumpTap has found that after an initial surge following the 2011 holiday season, the rates of ad impressions generated by Kindle Fire tablets has dropped. Back in January, the Kindle Fire was responsible for 33 percent of all ad impressions across JumpTap’s network, which covers Android tablets as well as Apple’s iPad. Since then, however, the number of Kindle Fire impressions has gradually declined to 22 percent.

Meanwhile, the iPad has popped back up to 65 percent of JumpTap’s impressions, the rate at which it had settled before the Kindle Fire came onto the scene (in January, the iPad’s impressions dropped as low as 48 percent). So while Amazon’s low-priced 7-inch tablet cut into Apple’s ad share for a while, the juggernaut device has rebounded.

Many Competing Paths on the Road to a Phone Wallet

Many Competing Paths on the Road to a Phone Wallet | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

The idea of using a smartphone as a wallet has been slow to catch on in the United States. A big part of the problem has been that most stores do not have the proper physical equipment to allow customers to pay by tapping their phone.

These stores also do not have the right equipment to allow the use of smart cards, credit cards embedded with computer chips that are much less susceptible to fraud.

But a change is coming that will push both innovations at the same time.

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn And The Hierarchy Of Needs [INFOGRAPHIC]

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn And The Hierarchy Of Needs [INFOGRAPHIC] | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is an important psychological theory that addresses the stages of growth in humans. Typically displayed in the shape of a pyramid, the largest and most base physiological needs – breathing, food, water, sleeping etc – are displayed at the bottom, followed by safety, love/belonging, esteem and self-actualisation.

This infographic takes Maslow’s theory and looks at the social media tools that fulfill these needs. While these platforms do not provide any physiological nourishment, it could be argued that Facebook and Google+ do help us maintain a sense of belonging through connections to friends and family. Twitter is good for our self-esteem, inasmuch as it empowers us to reach out to others and self-promote, and LinkedIn somewhat satisfies our need for safety, providing security for employment.

Facebook, Twitter, other social media are brain candy, study says | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

In a series of experiments, the Harvard researchers found that the act of disclosing information about oneself activates the same sensation of pleasure in the brain that we get from eating food, getting money or having sex. It's all a matter of degrees of course, (talking about yourself isn't quite as pleasurable as sex for most of us), but the science makes it clear that our brain considers self-disclosure to be a rewarding experience.

The growth of mobile commerce: infographic

The growth of mobile commerce: infographic | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Thanks to the iPhone and the popularity of smartphones, we've seen rapid growth of mobile commerce over the last couple of years.

According to IMRG stats, 7.7% of visits to UK e-commerce sites came from mobiles in 2011, accounting for 3.3% of all purchases.

This may seem low, but though most have seen the light, not every retailer has launched a mobile site or app. For those companies with more forward thinking mobile strategies, the gains are there to be had.

This infographic from IMRG and eDigital Research contains some great stats on m-commerce growth from 2009 to 2012...
