Demystifying social media

Demystifying social media | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

In short, today’s chief executive can no longer treat social media as a side activity run solely by managers in marketing or public relations. It’s much more than simply another form of paid marketing, and it demands more too: a clear framework to help CEOs and other top executives evaluate investments in it, a plan for building support infrastructure, and performance-management systems to help leaders smartly scale their social presence. Companies that have these three elements in place can create critical new brand assets (such as content from customers or insights from their feedback), open up new channels for interactions (Twitter-based customer service, Facebook news feeds), and completely reposition a brand through the way its employees interact with customers or other parties.

ITU: There Are Now Over 1 Billion Users Of Social Media Worldwide, Most On Mobile | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

What does it mean when Facebook says it has 901 million monthly active users on its network? According to figures out from the International Telecommunication Union, it effectively signifies that Facebook is the world’s largest social network by a very long shot. The ITU says in a new report that that the number of people using all social media services have passed the 1 billion mark. That is just 100 million shy of Facebook’s usage figure, giving Facebook a 90 percent share of all social networkers.

In contrast to the very biggest players of all — Facebook (900m+ users), Twitter (200m+ users) and LinkedIn (120m+ users) — the rest of the playing field is heavily localized, with services like QQ in China, Vkontakte in Russia, Mixi in Japan, and Google’s Orkut in Brazil, India, and Paraguay among those competing in the space, the ITU notes.

A retail revolution: How tablets are transforming brick-and-mortar commerce | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

An employee with a tablet in hand is at an advantage to help the average customers, who are more and more likely to have access to information on their smartphone or have researched their purchase on a tablet before entering a store.

Likewise, more and more retailers are catching on to the trend of using tablets. Here are some other great examples:

-Disney Stores and Urban Outfitters allow employees to ring up a customers purchase (and email their receipts) from an iPod Touch.
-Sears, Converse, Puma and Burberry have all rolled out tests of in-store tablets.
-Gucci and JC Penny are experimenting with ways to incorporate tablets into their stores.
-Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s both have tablet devices available at specific store locations to assist customers in researching a product, or to shop from a variety of styles.
-Nordstrom is rolling out 5,000 mobile checkout devices at 116 full-line stores in preparation for its Anniversary Sale in July.

Pay To “Highlight” Your Facebook Status Updates To More Friends

Pay To “Highlight” Your Facebook Status Updates To More Friends | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Only 12% of your friends see your average status update, but Facebook is testing an option called “Highlight” that lets you pay a few dollars to have one of your posts appear to more friends. Highlight lets the average user, not Pages or businesses, select an “important post” and “make sure friends see this”, but not color it yellow as Stuff wrote when it first spotted the feature. A tiny percentage of the user base is now seeing tests of a paid version of Highlight, but there’s also a free one designed to check if users are at all interested in the option.

Badabing Badaboom – Badoo Hits 150 Million Users, Boosted By Mobile

Badabing Badaboom – Badoo Hits 150 Million Users, Boosted By Mobile | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

With ‘social discovery’ all the rage with apps like Highlight, Banjo and Glancee attracting attention during this year’s SXSW it’s easy to forget there are players out there which have been doing this a tad longer. Badoo de-cloaked as a social network in London a few years ago with ‘discovery’ very much at its core, but with a twist – it encouraged people to promote themselves, sometimes with payment. Where Facebook concentrated on linking up with existing friends and friends of friends, Badoo was literally oriented towards you meeting new people all the time, and for others to push themselves out there. That gave it an obvious flirtatious feel, making it a quasi-dating site which happens to use a different method for getting people to pay. But it’s appealed to a lot of people. And I mean a lot. Currently on 149.8 million users, some time today that will tick over to hit 150 million, given it clocks around 150,000 a day.

How to design web sites for tablets

How to design web sites for tablets | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it
Five key differences …

In general, there are at least five key differences between designing websites for tablets, and designing for desktops and laptops:

- Size
Tablets are generally smaller (who knew?).
- Screen resolution
Tablets have widely varying screen resolutions (from the Kindle Fire’s 600×1,024 to the new iPad’s 2,048-by-1,536 pixels). Orientation is flexible as well, so user could be viewing your site in landscape or portrait, widescreen or tall.
- Compatibility
Yes, there’s the problem with Adobe Flash. But also other plugins (Silverlight, anyone?) and even JavaScript-heavy computationally-intensive web apps can cause problems on tablets.
- Touch interfaces
This is the big one. The touch interface is fundamentally different from a traditional desktop/laptop experience. It requires bigger clickable elements and fewer hidden navigation elements.
- Memory and CPU limitations
The limitation is often overlooked, but tablets have less RAM (working memory) and punier CPUs, so media-intensive experiences can be challenging for tablet users.

Apple\'s iPad is Top Enterprise Tablet Choice - slideshow | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

There was a time when just about every IT decision maker looked at Apple as the tech company that would kill their career if they so much as considered bringing the company's products into the office. In recent years, enterprise attitudes towards Apple and its products have changed dramatically. It seems each month, we're pelted with news of more and more companies deploying Macs across the office. With each new iPhone launch, we're told that the smartphone will become a favorite among corporate users. A recent study from research firm ChangeWave Research supports that premise, finding that Apple's iPad is the most popular tablet choice for enterprise users. The company polled 1,604 U.S. business IT buyers in February 2012 to discuss their tablet purchasing roadmap. More than one fifth (22 percent) of respondents said they plan on purchasing tablets for their employees in 2Q 2012. Here's what else the survey reveals about Apple iPad and other tablets in the enterprise.

Why Business Executives Fear Social Media Marketing

Why Business Executives Fear Social Media Marketing | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Beyond the numbers, the writer thinks there are three fundamental reasons why business leaders resist embracing social for their brand:

1. Fear of the Unknown - Many pre-Millennial execs see social as “the other.” They don’t really get it, or refuse to consider it, and they sure as heck aren’t going to let some young whippersnapper tell them how to use it. I think I was a bit like this until I realized that I was really just plain wrong.
2. Fear of Change - Apathy is the handmaiden of stagnation. For many busy executives, it seems like a lot of work to take on a new project, let alone a whole new paradigm.
3. Fear of Technology - A subtle but powerful roadblock, as the world embraces all things digital and techie at an exponential rate, many execs feel like they understand less and less about the underpinnings of their business.
