The traditional model of the lecture and learning cycle has long been to deliver the lecture during class and to send students home to do homework and perhaps engage in a discussion or two afterwards. The flipped classroom flips this model on its head: through lecture capture software, lectures can be captured on video for students to watch home, freeing up class time for hands-on learning activities and discussion.

From preschool to graduate school, if you are a classroom educator the term “flip” teaching has crossed, or is about to cross your path. Formally defined in the literature by Lage, Platt and Treglia (2000) as the “Inverted Classroom”, the catalyst for initial research was a need, particularly at the university level, to address a detrimental mismatch observed between instructor pedagogy and student learning style.

I’ve just finished up the spring semester, and with it the second iteration of the inverted classroom MATLAB course. With my upcoming move, it may be a while before I teach another course like this (although my experiments with targeted “flipping” went pretty well), so I am taking special care to unwind and document how things went both this year and last.
