Kim Flintoff's insight:

Watch this free presentation, given by Mary Fanelli Ayala, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), to learn how they achieved the ambitious goal of deploying campus-wide capture technology in less than 12 months.

This presentation outlines how ENMU went from pilot to full-scale deployment—with the support of faculty—of the most ground-breaking technological and academic initiatives in higher education, including:

Facilitating a flipped instruction pilot
Faculty are exploring the idea of pre-recording lectures so students can watch them prior to class, leaving class time dedicated to dynamic discussions and interactions
Creating hybrid classes
Classrooms and online students interact simultaneously via live webcasts
Branching out into asynchronous distance learning
Helping high school students earn college credits
Allow high school students to take college classes, either on campus or online, to earn high school and college credit
Recording special events and guest speakers, providing professional development online, connecting alumni and more

Flipped Classroom 2.0: Competency Learning With Videos

Flipped Classroom 2.0: Competency Learning With Videos | Active learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

The two teachers admit when they started flipping their classrooms they put everything into video form. Now, they’ve taken a step back and realized some things shouldn’t be in lecture form, and therefore shouldn’t be videos either. Instead, the two teachers have embraced what they call mastery learning, with an emphasis on students taking control of their own learning. Instructional videos are an optional part of a bigger move towards asynchronous learning.

University lectures are a legacy of our pre-digital past. Why persist with them when technology provides better tools?
Blaine Morrow's curator insight, May 17, 11:17 AM

"Today's standard lecture, as a knowledge delivery model, is a legacy of our pre-digital past. We already have decades of research behind us which says that, as far as learning goes, having one person stand up in front of lots of people and talking non-stop is about as ineffective as it gets."

Blaine Morrow's curator insight, June 10, 11:25 AM

"Videos are great for presenting visual information and emotional appeals, but not particularly effective at diving below the surface of non-visual theoretical or abstract topics or for driving critical thinking. What’s more, any video presented in class must compete for attention and memory with the five-plus hours the typical student spends outside of class watching television programs, movies, and other onscreen entertainment.
