4 best practices for Flipped Classroom implementation

4 best practices for Flipped Classroom implementation | Flipped ELA Middle School | Scoop.it

"The flipped classroom model has undeniably become a go-to learning model in the digital age of higher education, but what have educators learned since the model’s debut? What are the best practices that work?"

Charles Nyakito's curator insight, December 3, 2014 4:16 AM

The idea of a flipped classroom is a wonderful idea. Teachers waste a lot of time explaining new concepts to learners which time could have been saved if the teacher had given the learners the topics in advance to research using their mobile digital devices.and simply use class time to discuss. I wish to recommend for every teacher who has not tried these ideas to do so and enjoy the magic of flipping.

My favorite part of this article: "The goal of the model isn’t content knowledge (though it should produce that), but rather something closer to wisdom–learning how to learn, understanding what’s worth understanding, and perhaps most importantly, analyzing the purpose of learning (e.g., personal and social change). It also encourages the student to examine the relationship between study and work–an authentic “need to know” with important abstractions like citizenship and legacy." This is definitely worth studying and applying.

This article demonstrates how the use of digital or online learning tools and resources are integrating into the workplace and into the career of the knowledge worker. Social media sites such as Linked In ( http://linkedin.com ) and even Facebook ( http://facebook.com ) are providing resources for members to publish their "profiles" which in effect are E-portfolios.

One word of caution and that is if you begin to use such a site or your own blog as an E-Portfolio remember to keep it current. That way potential employers or contacts will know what you are really doing at the moment.

I am still surprised of how many subject-matter experts are still hesitate to move to student-centered practices. Maybe students do not share online because in some cases it is still teacher-focused. We need to continue to move individuals to more student-centered practices whether we are dealing with children or adults.

Online learning REQUIRES some discipline. It also requires strong writing skills so that when students participate in any online forums, they can express themselves with clarity and coherence. I LOVE that online learning gives students time to think through their answers, to return to a topic with additional thoughts and discernment. I LOVE that online learning can teach students that this thing we call learning is ever on-going.

When app-smashing on iPad, students and teachers use multiple apps to create individual pieces of content that are then merged or smashed together into one culminating product. Applying this concept dramatically increases creative potential, and the rate at which apps are developing allows for new, unique, and dynamic creations to consistently challenge what seemed possible only a few months or weeks ago. The final product involved in app-smashing often lends itself to video, so to kick off the school year, here are a few app-smashing video projects.

Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's comment, October 11, 2013 3:36 PM
Anna: About the only thing that I have issue with is the comment under "confidant" about wishing people in the school were as helpful as a PLN contact. It seems to me that if one is connecting in the virtual world there would also be an effort to connect in the physical one. PLNs and connected educators don't HAVE to go outside their physical space for every single learning interaction.
