Dean Stringer's insight:

Have sorted out a new WordPress host and am working on some plugins to help me use it for content curation as a possible substitute for using Scoopit. Mostly driven by the desire to own my own content and not be dependent on too many pay-for 3rd party services. Go on, take a look :)

A300 40th Birthday

A300 40th Birthday | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

This month marks the 40th anniversary of Airbus’ first-ever delivery – an A300B2 version handed over to Air France on 10 May 1974, which established the basis for the company’s global success and commitment to non-stop innovation

Dean Stringer's insight:

Sadly not too many of these machines were operated in the Pacific, but great to see there are many of them still serviceable even after all this time. Great looking machine, and a true pioneer technology and design wise

Review | xFuel Android App

Review | xFuel Android App | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

If you are looking for an app that will easily and quite accurately determine fuel usage and the amount of fuel to carry for you, xFuel is a great way to get there. It’s not the most finished product yet, which should be obvious, since it’s still in development. But what it does contain is certainly very useful. This product should be getting better and better and that’s a great thought.

Dean Stringer's insight:

Detailed review at Aerosoft by Rick Verhoog of what looks like a nice wee Android fuel planner app from Zygot Labs

Just Flight - Canberra PR9 for FSX

Just Flight - Canberra PR9 for FSX | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

This first-generation light bomber was manufactured in large numbers during the 1950s and set a number of speed and altitude records. Its adaptability meant that the aircraft also served in tactical bombing and photographic and electronic reconnaissance roles in conflicts on several continents.

Dean Stringer's insight:

Given the post WWII use of the Canberra's by RNZAF and RAAF forces there will no doubt be a few takes for this FSX+P3D model released via JustFlight.

Review: OpenCockpits 737 FMC

Review: OpenCockpits 737 FMC | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

To wrap it up I would say, high quality, a huge number of realistic details, superb finish, great look and feel and a fair price - I would certainly recommend the FMC to my fellow flight simmers around the flightsim community - especially if you enjoy flying commercial airliners such as the Boeing B737.

Dean Stringer's insight:

If you're a deepish pocketed simmer and like your hardware addons then checkout this review at flightsim.com this week by Ray Andersen of the OpenCockpits 737 FMC. Looks pretty sweet.

We are well underway with the Piper Cherokee and coming towards the close of Beta testing for the aircraft and also for the next Accu-sim core update. To start things off, here's a quick look at what it's like to fly the Piper Cherokee. Let us know what you think and any experiences you have with the low wing wonder

Dean Stringer's insight:

As reported at SimFlight this week the A2A guys have released a youTube vid discussing the differences between low wing and high wing GA aircraft, and some teaser info on their new Piper Cherokee which is in beta testing now. Looks wicked, no doubt will be as nicely done as their recent C172

Takeoff Performance Calculator now brings you one step closer to real life aircraft operations. With an extensive database on Boeing 737 Classics series performance, TOPER allows you to acurately calculate the highest safe assumed temperature to complete a reduced power takeoff and the appropriate takeoff speeds.

Dean Stringer's insight:

If you're a fan of the Classic 737s, and for simmers there are plenty of real world machines to emulate in the Pacific so who wouldn't be :) you might wanna check this out. It's payware, and not expensive, useful if you dont have access to fuel/performance charts.

AUScene's YSSY Professional v2

AUScene's YSSY Professional v2 | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

Version 2 of AUScene‘s Sydney Kingsford Smith International (YSSY/SYD) for FS9 and FSX brings a number of improvements over the original, including “[the new] Virgin Australia terminal along with redesigned aerobridges, completely new apron lights and light effects. On top of this the executive apron has been completely redone, just check out the screenshots showcasing this great new update.”

Dean Stringer's insight:

Interesting to see an update by AuScene of their Sydney product for FSX. Not sure they've done enough though based on the screenies given the FlyTampa competition in the pipeline.

Dean Bielanowski's comment, May 6, 4:08 AM
True, but the developer is not trying to compete with the upcoming FlyTampa release. Would be quite hard too in fact! Will be interesting to see how FlyTampa goes with performance of their Sydney airport. With all that detail, would hate for it to be a slideshow, but I guess they are well aware of that.

scenery. A bit later I bought FSDS and started on scenery, focusing
on RAF Gatow, where I used to go plane-spotting when I was young.

Review: Classics Hangar Bf108B

Most aviation fans, young or old, when hearing the name Messerschmitt, think of one thing: sleek grey and green shapes with yellow noses, swooping low over the Southern English countryside in pursuit of, or being pursued by, a Supermarine Spitfire. Forget everything else that the Bayerisch Flugzeugwerke or Messerschmitt ever built, it is the Bf109 [...]

Will the 757 Get MAX’d? | Pacific flight-sim news | Scoop.it

Rumors that the jet could make a glorious return to the skies were squelched by Boeing on Tuesday, who first reported the news to the Puget Sound Business Journal. The company has since also confirmed the news to Airchive.

Dean Stringer's insight:

speculation recently about whether there's scope for a 757 re-engineer, but sadly it seems we're not likely to be seeing re-engined 75's in Pacific skies any time soon.
