The transfer of learning | Onlignment

The transfer of learning | Onlignment | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

BY CLIVE SHEPHERD

Throughout 2011 we will be publishing extracts from The New Learning Architect. We move on to the fourth part of chapter 7:
A formal learning intervention is only successful if it results in lasting change in the learner’s behaviour on the job. In their 1992 book Transfer of Training, Mary Broad and John Newstrom estimated that “…merely 10% of the training dollars spent result in actual and lasting behavioural change.”

Examining motivation in online distance learning environments: Complex, multifaceted and situation-dependent | Hartnett | The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning

Maggie Hartnett, Alison St. George and John Dron

 IRRODL  OCT 2011

Existing research into motivation in online environments has tended to use one of two approaches. The first adopts a trait-like model that views motivation as a relatively stable, personal characteristic of the learner. Research from this perspective has contributed to the notion that online learners are, on the whole, intrinsically motivated. The alternative view concentrates on the design of online learning environments to encourage optimal learner motivation. Neither approach acknowledges a contemporary view of motivation that emphasises the situated, mutually constitutive relationship of the learner and the learning environment. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as a framework, this paper explores the motivation to learn of preservice teachers in two online distance-learning contexts. In this study, learners were found to be not primarily intrinsically motivated. Instead, student motivation was found to be complex, multifaceted, and sensitive to situational conditions.

Thinking about innovation in higher education

Thinking about innovation in higher education | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

From a Canadian perspective:

This article by Peter Stokes, an executive vice-president at Eduventures, has some interesting ideas about how to promote real innovation in the higher education system. In principle, he’s suggesting US Federal funding for a conventional public institution to set up a parallel organization to test alternative ways of organizing, delivering and assessing teaching and learning, but within the Federal regulatory environment to stop diploma mills benefiting from the funding.

The E-Portfolio Forum: Deepening High Impact Learning Sessions

Presenters: Frank Kline and Helen Barrett

This session describes the use of a teacher candidate assessment system built around a free blogging tool to create a portfolio designed to allow students to demonstrate their competence in relationship to the Washington State knowledge and skills for teachers. It also uses off-the-shelf tools to allow the program administrators to aggregate the data for purposes of program assessment. Presenters will describe the blog format and describe the processes used in assessment of the blogs. In addition, they will share examples of student blogs that have been completed and that are currently in progress. The session concludes with a small group interactive session where participants can brainstorm with each other about how they might apply the information shared to their situation.

» You can’t manage informal learning – only use of informal media Learning in the Social Workplace | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

By Jane Hart

ecently I’ve been reading more and more blog posts and articles that talk of how to “manage informal learning”, so I thought it was time for another post of my own that tries to explain how this is actually misleading, and in fact misses the big picture in terms of the importance of informal learning in the workplace, and L&D’s role in supporting it.

e-Learning Stuff » Using Learning Technologies

by James Clay

I was recently asked to give a short presentation at the Gloucester Academy on how Gloucestershire College used learning technologies. Though I did cover some of the technologies we are using to enhance and enrich learning, the main theme of the presentation was on how important it was to change the culture within an institution when embedding the use of learning technologies. Without a change in culture it is too easy to miss the potential and opportunities that learning technologies can bring to learning.

Learning with 'e's: The elephant in the room

Learning with 'e's: The elephant in the room | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Far too many futurologists, authors and commentators are ignoring the issue of the digital divide. Several books I have read recently on new and emerging technologies provide a healthy balance. They eulogise about the benefits, and are circumspect about the dangers of technology. Yet few acknowledge that many members of society are still technologically peripheral
