Empowering Action New Tools for Crisis and Humanitarian Response – The Ushahidi Blog

Empowering Action New Tools for Crisis and Humanitarian Response – The Ushahidi Blog | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

[Guest Blog post by Ryan Lanclos, ESRI, originally appeared on the ESRI Site.]

This week several members of our team attended the 3rd International Conference of Crisis Mappers (ICCM) that was held in Geneva, Switzerland and we were blown away by the turn out (Follow #ICCM on Twitter). This community has grown substantially over the last 3 years – when we attended the first conference held in Cleveland, Ohio back in 2009 there were about 100 attendees. Now there are more than 400 gathered here discussing crisis mapping and the challenges they face. There are really 3 main things that we keep hearing as it relates to GIS and mapping:

How to collect and organize data from the crowd around the globe as it relates to crisis
How to enable action from this data
How to build, collect, and maintain reference data for crisis

bitàcola: El món després dels LMS

bitàcola: El món després dels LMS | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Experiential learning | Onlignment | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

As learning and development professionals we are most alert to those opportunities which will help employees to ‘learn to’ carry out some task or fulfil some responsibility; we want to get ahead of the game, to equip employees with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the requirements of current and future job roles. Even when we put in place facilities and resources to support just-in-time learning-on-demand, we still have a forward looking focus, trying to get ahead of the game, even if only at the last minute.

Apple, iBooks Author, and Open Textbooks: RIP K-12 Publishers as We Know Them | iterating toward openness

Posted on January 26, 2012

Last week Apple made a rather significant iPad / iBooks / textbooks announcement. Several people have asked whether it is a net win or net loss for advocates of open textbooks specifically and affordability generally. From my perspective, the announcement is an outright win for advocates of affordability and open textbooks. Here’s why.

Developing Student Self Assessment Skills - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

What we’re talking about here is the fact that students do need to develop self assessment skills. They need to be able to look at their own work and with some accuracy assess its merits. That includes the work they do in our courses.

ePortfolios for Learning: Evernote for Intermediate Portfolios

ePortfolios for Learning: Evernote for Intermediate Portfolios | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

This blog attracts a lot of silent readers. Last November, one of my readers wrote to me with his story of how he was starting to use Evernote for ePortfolios in his grade 3-5 classroom. I am adding a version of the story about this school's experience into my book. Students in the intermediate classrooms (grades 3-5) in the Trillium Charter School (Portland, OR) are documenting their learning using Evernote on desktop computers, iPod Touch 4 (with the built-in camera), the teacher's iPhone and soon an iPad, with the addition of a wireless printer/scanner that can email scanned student work directly into their Evernote accounts. (They use a LexMark Pinnacle Pro 901 All-in-One that will scan paper on both sides... the biggest technical challenge was getting these printers set up, and adding all student Evernote email addresses). The Intermediate teachers have all adopted this process since the first of this calendar year, each adding one-to-three iPod Touch devices to supplement the three or four Free Geek donated Linux desktop computers in each classroom. I saw students choose the device they wanted to use to document their projects, with reflection scaffolded by a Portfolio Artifact and Reflection form that they could complete by hand and scan along with other paper or media.

A Taxonomy of Reflection: A Model for Critical Thinking

A Taxonomy of Reflection: A Model for Critical Thinking | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Over the last few years I've led many teachers and administrators on classroom walkthroughs designed to foster a collegial conversation about teaching and learning. The walkthroughs served as roving Socratic seminars and a catalyst for reflection. But reflection can be a challenging endeavor. It's not something that's fostered in school - typically someone else tells you how you're doing!
