Academic Development Unit UNE

Teaching Flexibly is a compulsory program for academic staff new to UNE. It’s designed to introduce staff to both online teaching methods and the learner context of UNE – a major distance/online education provider and a small, rural university with a unique demographic. While particularly useful for those who have previously taught in largely face to face contexts and those in their first teaching position, staff with previous online teaching experience will still find value in the program as a way to expand your teaching strategies and become familiar with UNE’s online environment.

A comparison of 2 technology integration frameworks

A comparison of 2 technology integration frameworks | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

A guidance framework is required. Should the framework be an explicit set of measurable standards or descriptive target areas? The two best frameworks that I have found for technology integration are the International Society for Technology in Educations ‘NET standards’ and the “21st century fluencies” developed as part of the 21st century fluency project.

Inside Active Learning Classrooms

The new Science Teaching and Student Services building at the University of Minnesota have Active Learning Classrooms  - A great example of HE classroom design to support a self directed learner who connects and collaborates with others to build knowledge and critical thinking skills. Wonderful to see teacher as guide rather than instructor! And even more wonderful to see classroom design that supports transformation in the architecture of learning.

Pontydysgu – Using technology for work based learning

Website of Pontydysgu ltd., a Welsh educational research institute.

Graham Attwell

Developing Work based Personal Learning Environments in Small and Medium Enterprises in the Building and Construction Industries.

Research and development in Personal Learning Environments has made considerable progress in recent years. Yet such research continues to be focused on learning through formal educational institutions. Far less attention has been paid to work based learning and still less to the particular context of learning in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Yet it could be argued that it is in just these contexts, where work can provide a rich learning environment and where there is growing need for continuing professional development to meet demands from new technology and materials and changing work processes that PLEs could have the greatest impact. However, for this to happen requires a dual approach, based on informal learning and the development of network and mobile technologies. This paper will describe an approach being developed for learning in SMES, specifically in the building and construction industry in north Germany.

James G. Mazoué

Four converging trends are undermining land-based campuses as the preeminent source of knowledge acquisition and certification. The emergence of the learning sciences, the wikification of knowledge, the unbundling of faculty roles, and the migration of learning online are driving fundamental institutional change toward location-independent alternatives. Conventional assumptions about the necessity for, and superiority of, location-dependent teaching and learning at colleges and universities are losing their plausibility as learning is transformed by more effective alternatives offering more precise and scientifically grounded optimizations embedded in Web-based course architectures. The combination of precision education, open courseware, the greater specialization of teaching roles, and the expansion of Web-enabled learning are all implicated in a process leading toward the decentralization of institutional practices supporting land-based learning. These trends are not only disruptive but are serving to displace post-secondary institutions in their traditional role as the primary providers of knowledge and academic credentials.

e4innovation.com » Metaphors by @gconole

Grainne Conole.

In this post I want to argue that our interaction in digital networked technologies is complex, dynamic and evolving, and that we need new metaphors to be able to explain theses interactions. Metaphors and storytelling have always been important ways in which we communicate with others and share meaning. In the early days of the Internet the discourse centred on notions of time and space, essentially replicating our physical existence into the virtual environment. We talked of virtual universities, cafes, libraries, etc.

Beyond the Textbook

by AUDREY WATTERS on 19 MAR, 2012

I've spent the day with a group of educators invited to Discovery HQ in Silver Springs, Maryland to participate in a forum titled "Beyond the Textbook." As with a number of the events I've attended recently, I've opted to storify the notes, Tweets, and blog posts (and I should add here that these don't just come from the participants at the event but from those that participated in the discussions via the Web. That right there seems to point in the direction of "beyond" I think we need to consider...
