EURODL| Towards a Theory of Digital Literacy: Three Scenarios for the Next Steps

Abstract

This paper focuses on the discussion of the digital literacy skills that are considered necessary for effective and mindful learning in the emerging digital environments. To date, the discourse on this important subject has been practice-oriented, and lacks a sound integrative framework and theoretical foundation. This grave lacuna in the current discourse on learning in general, and on learning in the digital culture in particular, calls for a clear and theoretically-grounded view of the basic literacies required for effective learning in digital environments. Accordingly, this paper reviews an integrative framework for digital literacy recently suggested by Eshet-Alkalai (2004; 2005) as a starting point for the much-needed theorization. Two basic strategies – the conservative and the skeptical – are considered for this purpose. The first strategy relies on the basic assumption of the current discourse that "digital skills" are indeed nothing but skills. The second strategy, based on doubts concerning this assumption, leads to two different skeptical hypotheses. The first contends that the skill-oriented discourse can be reduced to the older discourses on learning styles and multiple intelligences; the second attempts to reduce it to the much more fundamental discourse on the clash between the modern book-based and the post modern digital cultures.

La présentation Les outils de veille informationnelle, d’archivage, de rediffusion et de curation de l’information passe en revue différentes techniques et outils de veille de façon large avec une méthodologie de projet qui va de l’amont à l’aval.

Student responsibility in a collaborative curriculum Week 6 ED366

Student responsibility in a collaborative curriculum Week 6 ED366 | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

In reading blog posts this week, i can see a real turn in the way that people are speaking. We’re hearing less about what the technology is, and with people’s challenges with the technology and more about what the changes in technology mean to their work. This week I’d like to talk a little bit about the responsibility that the student has when the community is the curriculum.

How To Best Curate Twitter User Lists: Research Paper (PDF)

How To Best Curate Twitter User Lists: Research Paper (PDF) | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

From the original research paper by Derek Greene, Gavin Sheridan, Barry Smyth, and Padraig Cunningham of the School of Computer Science & Informatics, University College Dublin entitled "Aggregating Content and Network Information
to Curate Twitter User Lists": "The problem of content curation in social media networks is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the context of news curation for media outlets.

In the case of Twitter, curating a list of authoritative users tweeting about a
given news story provides a means of monitoring discussions around that story.

However, currently this is a time-consuming manual task. Here we presented a
range of criteria for building topical user lists, based on an initial seed set.

By analysing the cohesion of the training data across di erent views of the same
datasets, we demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of these recommenda-
tion criteria, in the context of a limited availability of Twitter data.

To overcome the weaknesses, we proposed the use of SVD rank aggregation. Experiments on a range of Twitter datasets relating to US politics demonstrated that this aggregation process yields more robust recommendations, succeeding in cases where individual content- or network-based criteria perform poorly."

Learning with 'e's: Dialogue, debate and destinations

I don't have the time or the inclination to calculate how many miles I have travelled in the last week, but it involved three car journeys, 11 train rides, numerous taxi trips and one flight. I managed to keynote four conferences in six days, respectively eLearning 2.0 at Brunel University, London; the CILIPS annual conference at the Apex Hotel in Dundee; the Solstice Conference at Edge Hill University, and finally the Digital Literacies Conference at Southampton University. I spent much of my time gazing out at the countryside going by from the windows of trains, but during the times my feet were on firm ground I did also manage to have some decent and productive conversations with old friends and new, and fielded questions from delegates during my presentations at all four events.

“When one thinks about research, most people think of scientific research involving double-blind studies and the like. But research takes many forms, including numerous activities that include discovery, interviews, surveys, collecting useful information, and so on. What do all forms of research have in common? All seek to bring about the collecting of data and turning that data into knowledge for the good of the community. And the Guild’s community is you!”
