Making the most of informal learning

Via Paulo Simões

Peter B. Sloep's curator insight, February 3, 2013 2:22 PM

Useful summary of the fundamental characteristics of informal learning and how it relates to workplace learning. A plea largely to abandon formal training and replace it with informal learning. Although short on evidence, the presentation is high on intuitive appeal for those who are convinced of the power of social media for learning. (@pbsloep)

Kolowich, S. (2012) Who takes MOOCs? Inside Higher Education, June 5
Article about a survey of 14,000 participants in Stanford’s Andrew Ng’s course on machine learning. It should be noted that the response rate is around 14% of all those that enrolled. The most common reason was that participants were curious about the topic. Relatively small numbers said they were doing it specifically for career advancement.

| Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Curative Thinkers and Solution Connectors

Curative Thinkers and Solution Connectors | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Robin Good: In the age of global, collective and crowdsourced interaction, many among us are starting to play the role of "connectors". We help like-minded people find each other, or good and complementary ideas to meet halfway.

Here is an interesting take from Nick Kellet on the possible different types of "connectors" out there, among which he identifies also a "solution connector", or someone able to pull together different information, resources and ideas to tell a story or to cover an issue/topic like a museum curator would do.

From the original article: "Are you an Solution Connector? > CURATIVE THINKER

...A solution connector isn't someone who create new ideas per se, being curative is just a different kind of creative.

They think a little more like a museum curator – they tell a story.

Their special skill is deciding which bits to keep and which to remove. They put together a Solution or an Exhibit. They let the whole idea tell a story. They assemble.

...Another metaphor is standing on the shoulders of giants. I watched this done brilliantly by Dave Kellogg whilst at Business Objects. Dave is a master of assembling ideas from across the gene pool and then crafting a wonderful story.

For me I’ve learned that Curation is far more effective and far more scalable than Creative Thinking.

...Curation Thinking is on the rise."

Developing Your Digital Study Skills

Developing Your Digital Study Skills | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Making the move from our safe and trusted traditional literacy habits to newer digital skills can be quite a challenge, but as teachers I think we are really unlikely to be able to use technology and help our students use technology really effectively unless we are prepared to face this challenge. Technology needs to be more than part of the way we teach but it also has to be part of the way we ourselves continue to learn and part of our everyday professional practice.

Thank you for your kind words and positive feedback Jenny - much appreciated! :-)
Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 10, 2014 2:20 PM

There is a new question about knowledge and sustaining the community. In the high-paced world we live in, has school, as we currently have it structured, meeting the demands? I think we believe school is a place that expresses common knowledge, but there are some who think it is a place of innovation. I think it has outlived its usefulness and should be a place where students and teachers learn the skills, attitudes, dispositions, etc. that help them decipher the information they come in contact with and can wisely apply it. This will take talented teachers.

Peer production is not in itself directly relevant to augmented collective intelligence, but I believe that understanding the dynamics of p2p production entails a deepening understanding of the ways our use of media can augment collective intelligence -- Howard

"This publication is a collection of articles that deals broadly with the relationships between peer-to-peer dynamics, and the design, production and provision of public services. Most of the cases presented are illustrative of recent developments and discussions in Finnish society, however other broader international perspectives which give historical reflection and future-oriented speculation on what might be the outcomes are

included.

There are many challenges and opportunities in designing, developing and maintaining services for participatory modes of governance, not to mention their co-creation and peer-to-peer aspects. We ask what can be learned from current research, and what is happening already beyond academia?"
