This being the time of year when many Canadian post-secondary institutions offer faculty development opportunities, I have been busy the last two or three weeks giving lectures at the Université de Sherbrooke and Université Laval in Québec, and also at Vancouver Community College. Although the presentations have varied a little depending on the context, the main theme of my presentations has been fairly consistent.

La única medida realmente impactante de la política universitaria que el gobierno ha puesto en marcha en estos días es la que todo el mundo estaba temiendo: la desproporcionada subida de los precios de matrícula. Nadie ha calculado todavía qué repercusión tendrá esto sobre los ciudadanos de a pie. Pero hay algo que ya podemos adelantar: 1) Una subida del 50% en el precio de cualquier servicio deja a una parte de la población “fuera del mercado”. 2) En el caso de las universidades los afectados negativamente no serán los hijos de los poderosos, ni de los ricos, muchos de los cuales ya están pagando elevados precios por conseguir en el sector privado nacional e internacional lo que sus méritos académicos no les permiten conseguir en el sector público.

Une tablette n’a jamais révolutionné l’enseignement… pas plus qu’un TBI « Veille et Analyse TICE

Après l’ordinateur, Internet, le TBI, les réseaux sociaux, etc… Va-t-on retomber encore dans le piège de l’outil qui révolutionne la pédagogie, l’enseignement voire l’apprentissage ? La réponse est OUI, malheureusement. Et c’est la tablette qui va s’y coller. Une nouvelle fois on va voir se développer les gourous de l’objet technique qui vont venir nous vendre les vertus pédagogiques de la machine. Ce sont parfois les mêmes qui à chaque nouveauté technique sont venus nous vendre la dernière coqueluche des commerciaux dont ils relaient allégrement le discours et qu’ils enrobent d’un pseudo discours pédagogique qui semble disqualifier tous les précédents, car on n’a jamais vu ça.

The problem that it addresses is simple and fundamental: too much data; too little meaning. The visual analytics approach aims to provide users with interactive tools for allowing them to explore the data in a variety of ways identifying what appears to be meaningful, and what appears to be superfluous. I was in Vancouver at AERA 2012 last week, where I had the opportunity to present some of my recent work and catch up with colleagues. A few of the conversations I had centered around the increasing interest our field is receiving. This is a great time to be involved with educational technology, though there’s a lot of discussion about what higher education may look like a few years down the road. At the same time however, contemporary discourse on how technology can “transform” education concerns me because it is largely guided by techno-enthusiasm, techno-determinism, and a desire to improve “efficiency,” on models grounded on marginal costs and revenues

What do you think about change and education? ‘Change’ and ‘education’ spoken in the same sentence has been compared to mixing oil and water. But is education more resistant to change than any other institution, corporation, government bureau, etc? I don’t think so. Yet I’m sure you’ll agree that change is hard, not natural, yet being adaptable, fluid and open to new ideas leads to good things… creative, crazy, innovative and even life change things.

Over the years we have created a confusing profusion of terms to describe learning with the help of information technology: e-learning, distance learning, net-based learning, computer-assisted learning, flexible learning, blended learning, technology enhanced learning - the list goes on. None of these terms has been properly defined and the same term can mean different things to different people.
