Now that “social learning” is becoming a hot topic, organizations are beginning to consider how they can implement or operationalize it.

We have already seen that social media is a very different beast from normal enterprise tools, particularly because it is being used at the grass roots rather than being implemented top-down by the organization. Social tools are not only changing the way that we think about “learning” but also how we apply them. Several high-profile tech companies have already signed up for Coursera's new employee-matching service. Udacity offers a similar service.

 

Providers of free online courses are officially in the headhunting business, bringing in revenue by selling to employers information about high-performing students who might be a good fit for open jobs.

On Tuesday, Coursera, which works with high-profile colleges to provide massive open online courses, or MOOC's, announced its employee-matching service, called Coursera Career Services.

 

Udacity, another company that provides free online courses, offers a similar service. Udacity works directly with professors to offer courses, rather than signing agreements with colleges.

 

Udacity's founder, Sebastian Thrun, said in an interview that 350 partner companies had signed up for its job program. While Mr. Thrun would not say how much employers pay, he characterized the fee as "significantly less than you'd pay for a headhunter, but significantly more than what you'd pay for access to LinkedIn," a popular social network for job hunters.

Ossiannilsson, Ebba: Benchmarking e-learning in higher education: Lessons learned from international projects - Doctoral dissertation 2012

"This doctoral dissertation revealed challenges to integrate external quality audits and internally driven benchmarking. The studies have likewise revealed the need for methodological changes by quality assurance bodies and authorities carrying out audit and accreditation for integrating e-learning into quality assurance, as well as the need to fully understand the complexity and the special characteristics of e-learning. Probably, the challenge lies not with the system, success factors or benchmarks but in the lack of knowledge and experience of e-learning systems amongst those charged with implementation. The concept benchlearning was introduced as part of benchmarking exercises."

El reciente informe sobre la productividad de las universidades españolas elaborado por la Fundación BBVA y el IVIE destaca, entre otras muchas cosas, que 18 de las 50 universidades públicas son responsables de más de la mitad de la producción científica universitaria (medida ésta en términos de documentos producidos y de citas recibidas). Esa tendencia a la concentración, no es sin embargo exclusiva de España (se produce también en el resto de Europa y en EE.UU.)...
