A comment by Jason Green on twitter got me thinking again about a different lens through which to see the MOOC. The book, and particularly the textbook, are at the core of many of our classrooms. There’s no denying that having the content for a course all tied up in a handy, portable, near unbreakable format is convenient. Proof of this can be found in the fact that the yearly slaying of trees, organizing of content, printing and ordering of books and queuing in the bookstore to purchase them are almost as strong today as it was 30 years ago. Surely some people (I’m looking at you Cable Green) have encouraged a move towards taking those books online, but many of those models replicate much of the ‘prepare, organize and buy’ models of the paper book industry while saving trees and avoiding fleecing the student. Those books are still, however, finite and finished.

As part of the research I’ve been doing on open educational resources — their creation and adoption — I’ve been talking to a wide variety of educators about their own OER usage. It’s hardly been a formal survey, but rather a Google survey and a handful of casual conversations. But the results are interesting nonetheless, particularly in highlighting why people do not use OER when — so the argument goes — free and openly licensed content is better.

But in the film, Coursera’s Koller says one of the revolutions in education is that teaching will be less about conveying information and more of a return to its original roots where instructors engage in dialogue, develop critical thinking skills and spark passion about a discipline"

 

“Knowing something is probably an obsolete idea,” he says in the documentary. “You don’t actually need to know anything. You can find out at the point when you need to know it. It’s the teacher’s jobs to point young minds to the right kind of question. The teacher doesn’t need to give any answers because answers are everywhere.”

Comment monter un fab lab (« laboratoire local qui rend possible l’invention en ouvrant aux individus l’accès à des outils de fabrication numérique » selon la définition du MIT ») au sein d’un espace public numérique ou comment créer un fab lab sur un territoire ? L’association PiNG (Nantes) a créé et met à disposition un wiki nommé FABlabo comme un espace dédié non seulement aux activités du fab lab / lieu partagé de la structure, mais également pour expliciter des projets mis en place au sein de fab labs mis et des ressources pour équiper un fab lab.

Les Fablab sont cruciaux dans la transition sociétale. Ils seront parmi les principaux fossoyeurs de l'emploi salarié. 

 

Grâce à eux, n'importe qui pourra gagner sa vie en fabriquant n'importe quoi grâce à la mise à disposition de technologies qui nécessiteraient un investissement trop important et, surtout, de compétences.
