Sources and Tags: Dennis O'Connor's Curating Secrets | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

There's no question that Dennis O'Connor has found much success on Scoop.it. It wasn't all coincidental, though. Dennis shared with us two of his best curation secrets and tricks:

1. Develop multiple sources for your topics
It's important to carefully think through the keywords that you set for your topic so that Scoop.it can crawl the web and provide you with interesting and relevant content and inspiration. In addition to taking full advantage of this, Dennis also uses other tools like Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Prismatic to find content to share on Scoop.it. Once he finds the content he wants to share with his audience, he uses Scoop.it as his social media hub to add value to that content and share it everywhere.

2. Tag your posts
Dennis takes a lot of time to tag each of his posts. This allows him, he explained, to assemble publications based upon his tagged topics. When he's using his information on Scoop.it for his E-learning classes, it's easy for him to filter his Scoop.it pages based upon different subjects and easily compile a list of posts and articles on appropriate topics to provide to his students. Something interesting that Dennis does with his tagged articles is to pull them by subject and create "special editions" of his topics on his blog for special classes and events that he is teaching.

Curative Thinkers and Solution Connectors

Curative Thinkers and Solution Connectors | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

Robin Good: In the age of global, collective and crowdsourced interaction, many among us are starting to play the role of "connectors". We help like-minded people find each other, or good and complementary ideas to meet halfway.

Here is an interesting take from Nick Kellet on the possible different types of "connectors" out there, among which he identifies also a "solution connector", or someone able to pull together different information, resources and ideas to tell a story or to cover an issue/topic like a museum curator would do.

From the original article: "Are you an Solution Connector? > CURATIVE THINKER

...A solution connector isn't someone who create new ideas per se, being curative is just a different kind of creative.

They think a little more like a museum curator – they tell a story.

Their special skill is deciding which bits to keep and which to remove. They put together a Solution or an Exhibit. They let the whole idea tell a story. They assemble.

...Another metaphor is standing on the shoulders of giants. I watched this done brilliantly by Dave Kellogg whilst at Business Objects. Dave is a master of assembling ideas from across the gene pool and then crafting a wonderful story.

For me I’ve learned that Curation is far more effective and far more scalable than Creative Thinking.

...Curation Thinking is on the rise."

New Teachers Should Become Content Curators: Curtis Bonk

Curtis Bonk, professor emeritus at Indiana University, shares in this interview I did with him two years ago, what he thinks are the new skills required to teachers of the 21st century to leverage the power of the Internet for learning. And curation is among them.

Many thanks for sharing this, Robin! I couldn´t agree more with the prediction that 21st century education will definitely need "super e-coaches" with 3 characteristics (1) domain expertise, (2) a deep understanding of the Internet for learning and teaching purposes and (3) counselling skills. If we, as teachers, are able to perform this task, this, in turn, can also serve as a model for our students so they can develop themselves the necessary skills to integrate and make sense of the vast information available. Skills that they will certainly need for their future.

What Makes A Great Curator Great?

What Makes A Great Curator Great? | Educación flexible y abierta | Scoop.it

This piece was brilliantly written by my fellow curator, Robin Good. In Robin's own words - A great curator does the following:

"Optimizes, Edits, Formats, Selects, Excerpts, Writes, Classifies, Links, Personalizes, Vets, Credits, Filters, Taps, Suggests, Searches, Scouts, Hacks Filters and Searches, Is Transparent, Recommends, Crowdsources"

As you read this article, pay attention to how he has done all the above. He creates a standard, he gives you some criteria so you can understand what makes someone great and what makes someone no so great.

Robin: Your point about using metrics and data .. I think what you are saying is that we should be "data-informed" - not data driven. That we don't just look at data to make decisions- but we bring our whole wisdom and knowledge and point of view to it .. http://www.bethkanter.org/curiosity-driven/

Merci Veille !

Curators Key Requirement: Critical Thinking

Robin Good: Critical thinking is a key strategic skill needed by any serious professional curator.

"Critical thinking provides the keys for our own intellectual independence..." and it helps to move away from "rashy conclusions, mystification and reluctance to question received wisdom, authority and tradition" while learning how to adopt "intellectual discipline" and a way to express clearly ideas while taking personal responsibility for them.

Key takeaways from this video:

Critical thinking refers to a diverse range of intellectual skills and activities concerned with "evaluating information" as well as our own thought in a disciplined way.
Critical thinking is not just thinking a lot. To be an effective critical thinker you need to seek out and be guided by "knowledge" and "evidence" that fits with reality even if it refutes what the general consensus may want to believe.
Critical thinkers cultivate an attitude of curiosity and they are willing to do the work required to keep themselves informed about a subject.
Critical thinkers do not take claims at face value but utilize scepticism and doubt to suspend judgement and objectively evaluate with facts the claims being made.
Critical thinkers should evaluate information on the basis of reasoning and not by relying on emotions as claims the factuality of a claim cannot be solely based on the level of emotion that accompanies them or the fact that they may be believed by certain groups.

Highly recommended for all curators. 9/10

Thank you for sharing this video and the importance of critical thinking. It is so easy to get into the mindless consumption trap and making ourselves slow down, read, think, question, and seek is so important. It is all about the resisting the urge to click, but to hit the pause button and make yourself think
Mayra Aixa Villar's comment, February 22, 2012 10:14 AM
Grazie come sempre, Robin! You always share valuable information and this video is a great source to reflect on the importance of critical thinking to refine thought processes when curating content. Content curation certainly requires and develops "better thinking".
Gregory Thackston's curator insight, March 17, 4:54 PM

Critical thinking is a key component in addressing autonomous adversity and the need to collaborate in decision making.
