Why Khan Academy Is The Wrong Answer

Why Khan Academy Is The Wrong Answer | Flat Classroom | Scoop.it

..."However, the weak link in our current learning paradigm isn’t content delivery. Traditional textbooks deliver content efficiently and effectively, and access to content is cheaper and easier than at any other time in history thanks to the internet. It’s only with the guidance of a skilled teacher and interaction with other learners that content becomes relevant and engaging. That’s what makes good teaching important. Future education is better served by investing in and developing tools that support discussion and interaction, not improving content delivery."...

In education there as many questions and answers as there are children. Kahn Academy is not the wrong answer. Neither is it the right answer. It is ONE answer to the question: How can we increase access to content and information for students and adults who want to learn?

Study calls for stronger focus on IT and entrepreneurial skills in schools

Study calls for stronger focus on IT and entrepreneurial skills in schools | Flat Classroom | Scoop.it

I don't like these "homo economicus" arguments for edcuation, but the point is taken all the same.

European Commission - Press Release - European Commission Press release Brussels, 19 November 2012

The teaching of IT, entrepreneurial and citizenship skills is fundamental for preparing young people for today's job market, but, in general, schools are still paying insufficient attention to these transversal skills compared with basic skills in literacy, mathematics and science, according to a new European Commission report. Part of the problem is rooted in difficulties with assessment.

Interesting slide show to come across. It really shows the components of a flat class and allows the students to see that the world really is just a flat, global community. I got some interesting ideas from this slide show. I like the "Handshake" portion of the production- using such video applications like Skype (with teacher/adult supervision, of course) allows students to communicate with other children from around the world. They really get to see how others live and can compare and contrast their lives to them. In order to connect the world, classrooms need to engage in meaningful discussions and collaborations and ask questions. Just like the last slide says, "Once you go flat you never go back!"
