Walnut Creek's 'smart' meters hand out false tickets

Walnut Creek's 'smart' meters hand out false tickets | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
The meters, similar to ones used in San Francisco, receive a wireless signal when a vehicle enters or leaves a parking spot. [...] the city identified isolated areas where the sensor sensitivity was too high, resulting in the sensor detecting passing vehicles, or a car entering an adjacent space. In other words, if a car pulled up in a neighboring space or a large truck drove by, it could automatically reset the meter, rendering its current occupant illegally parked.
Fixed's insight:

Walnut Creek -- we feel your pain. Another example of faulty or false ticket writing in the Bay area.

Keep your receipts and payment stubs, folks!

Today, the "Three Feet for Safety" law went into effect. This new official law says that drivers must give at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist. And, if…
Fixed's insight:

Attention San Francisco drivers!

Yesterday the city passed a new law into effect which requires drivers to give cyclists at least 3 feet of space while passing, or wait until that 3 feet is attainable, in an effort to reduce cycle-on-car accidents.

Here's a handy way to visualize what that 3 feet looks like in real life courtesy of the Bold Italic.

So-called Parking Citations Issued by Private Companies Are Invalid

So-called Parking Citations Issued by Private Companies Are Invalid | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
Recently, many folks in the San Francisco Bay Area and other areas have reported receiving supposed parking tickets that were issued by the private company that owns the land on which their vehi
Fixed's insight:

Did you know that tickets from private parking garages (parking institutions that are not governed by the city) are often invalid and can be challenged or even disregarded? Fines from private parking institutions are legally unenforceable.

Of course, you shouldn't disregard the rules, as a private property owner does have the right to police public parking on their property. Check the rules and regulations you agree to when parking in a public facility.

But be careful! Your car can (and will) be legally towed if it is in violation of the stated time limit or other restrictions. The parking code gives them the right to tow -- but no right to issue any type of parking citation.

California State Senator Arrested For Drunk Driving Hours After Voting To Toughen Regulations On Uber

California State Senator Arrested For Drunk Driving Hours After Voting To Toughen Regulations On Uber | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
Hueso voted for legislation that would affect Uber's ability to operate in California and was later arrested for DUI.
Fixed's insight:

It is always a sad day when an elected official and role model gets into trouble -- particularly with something so easily preventable as a DUI charge.

But.. getting picked up for drunk driving HOURS after voting to kill ridesharing (like Uber and Lyft, where data suggests these services decrease the amount of DUI arrests in active service areas) is completely unacceptable.

Oh, and of course, this guy's brothers own a taxi company.

No Real Consequences For Muni Drivers Who Can't Prove They Were Sick During Sickout

No Real Consequences For Muni Drivers Who Can't Prove They Were Sick During Sickout | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
Half the drivers who called in sick during the June sickout didn't bother to get a doctor's note, but they won't be punished.
Fixed's insight:

What would happen to you if you called out sick, but then strolled into the office to pick up your pay check? Probably get fired or at least yelled at, right?

Not so for Muni drivers! Your parking ticket dollars are going straight into the pocket of Muni drivers who call out sick during "sick outs," a way to force contract negotiations, and are then never required to provide proof of their alleged "illness."

No wonder this broken organization has a $17M deficit.

Fixed's insight:

Did you know that MUNI approved, and has implemented, a universal fair hike? MUNI will now cost $2.25 per ride, and passes have increased several dollars each per month.

This hike is partially to bankroll the $235M gap between available funds, and funds required, to pay for the approved new MUNI fleet (sticker price: $1.2B).

If You Want to See Inequality in the U.S. at Its Worst, Visit an Impound Lot

If You Want to See Inequality in the U.S. at Its Worst, Visit an Impound Lot | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
For millions of Americans a towed car can lead to a crippling spiral of stress, debt, joblessness, illness and, in many cases, incarceration.
Fixed's insight:

Is it ever "okay" to tow a car? Transportation has made it possible for people to live more spread out lives -- living in places more affordable and driving to the nearest major metro a culturally-accepted and normal thing to do.

That puts people in a precarious position. Their livelihoods often depend on being able to get to and from their place of business -- and having their car seized is often more than an inconvenience, it's a catastrophe.

It costs (with no outstanding tickets or "storage" fees) nearly $500 to get your car out of impound if its towed. Can't pay that moment? Every 4 hours of "storage" is an additional fee. Can't pay the fee at all? The city takes possession of your car and auctions it to "recoup its losses."

How is this fair? Discuss in the comments!

Too many parking tickets in SF | SF Bay Guardian

Too many parking tickets in SF | SF Bay Guardian | Fixed App News | Scoop.it

San Francisco made $87 million in parking citation revenue in 2012; roughly double what the city made off actual paid parking meter revenue.

Fixed's insight:

You may think that as an app which helps people contest parking tickets might wish more parking tickets existed in SF -- but that couldn't be further than the truth.

Learn why we think that by checking out our co-founder David's article on the parking ticket situation in the San Francisco Guardian.

2 Investigates: Unfair parking tickets

2 Investigates: Unfair parking tickets | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
2 Investigates uncovered deeper systemic problems with the issuing and billing process of parking tickets in San Francisco, including collection notices being sent to the wrong drivers.
Fixed's insight:

As a follow up to a recent post about unfair parking tickets, I wanted to share this exposé by KTVU in San Francisco. They've uncovered a pretty impressive amount of grossly unfair (and unjust) parking ticket circumstances. Tickets and car information are automatically checked against the DMV records for the license plate being cited, and if a mismatch is discovered, often the ticket it *still* written -- which frequently results in collection activity.

What's more, the collection agency has a clear conflict of interest -- the agency nets up to 30% of all ticket fines it recovers -- accurately written or completely false. While the SFMTA claims that it "does not want to collect money it is not owed," it also claims that if the car make is inputted incorrectly, then the citation is valid.

Which means, simply put, that if a SFMTA officer inputs your license plate when writing a ticket for another car and inputs the make which is for the car actually in violation of the law, you are personally on the line for that citation fee.

Want More Parking in SF? Be Careful What You Wish For | Streetsblog San Francisco

Want More Parking in SF? Be Careful What You Wish For | Streetsblog San Francisco | Fixed App News | Scoop.it
Fixed's insight:

Prop L is a piece of legislation which is attempting to solve the parking issue in San Francisco, namely, by building more parking structures in areas outside the downtown core.

Ignoring the obvious bias in this article -- abundant, inexpensive parking structures *could* potentially ease the burden of city dwellers who are also car owners, without drastically impacting the aesthetic of the city, as the anti-L supporters would have you think.

What are your thoughts? Would you rent a spot in a new garage in your neighborhood to avoid the perils of street parking?

So, in retaliation, they're giving up their code to anyone interested in trying to solve San Francisco's massive public parking issue -- making it an open source project called "Freetch."

What do you think? Should Sweetch have been banned?
