Martial arts - preventing injury - Better Health Channel

Martial arts - preventing injury - Better Health Channel | Five Friends | Scoop.it
The risk of injury from martial arts is low compared to other contact sports. Different forms of martial arts include karate, kung fu, ju jitsu, kickboxing, judo and tae kwon do. Most injuries are to the limbs and are usually mild to moderate, for example bruises or cuts.
AdventureOHS's insight:

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! If you're able to prevent injuries then then applying first aid becomes null and void. If you can prevent injuries from happening the risk reduces significantly that an injury will occur.

Taekwondo Queensland Risk Policy

AdventureOHS's insight:

This would be good for Dale to follow as it can point out what the Taekwondo Association of Queensland actually considers as a risk. With this Dale can then focus on what risks could be reduced more than others and also be a learning tool for him to familiarize what risks should be mitigated.

Dale: Martial Arts Instructor

Dale: Martial Arts Instructor | Five Friends | Scoop.it
AdventureOHS's insight:

Dale, Martial Arts Instructor

The main aspects of OH&S within this environment would be the prevention of injury through clear and concise instructions of how to perform a technique, not only to prevent injury to the person performing the technique but to the partner of the person performing the technique. Another OH&S aspect would be to provide instruction on conditioning to prevent injury (eg proper stretching techniques etc.) plus making the dojang as safe as possible to train within.

Dave: Insolvency Accountant.

Dave: Insolvency Accountant. | Five Friends | Scoop.it
AdventureOHS's insight:

Dave, Insolvency Accountant

Dave would have the normal ergonomic OH&S issues to deal with for example, computer posture, single position for long lengths of time, etc. However when speaking to Dave, an interesting OH&S issue came to light. Because he is an insolvency accountant, sometimes he has the unfortunate task to inform workers of a certain company that they have been made redundant. Due to this fact he said that they have tried to take it out on him (even though he is just the messenger) therefore he has had to assess the risk that it coul happen and then have security provided to escort him around and back to his car!

Vivian; Community and Stake Holder Partnerships Superintendent QLD Operations

Vivian; Community and Stake Holder Partnerships Superintendent QLD Operations | Five Friends | Scoop.it
AdventureOHS's insight:

Vivian; Community and Stake Holder Partnerships Superintendent QLD Operations,

Vivian's role in her job is basically a managerial role in a mine site where she still has to abide by the OH&S standards required for that mine site. Her main OH&S hazards and risk are associated with ensuring others are following the correct procedures within the mine site for the risk of litigation against her and the company she works for, if she dose not carry out her role correctly. Some of the things that she has to ensure is the proper induction of staff, carrying out personnel clearance checks and site clearances fit for work!

When Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he wasn’t speaking about martial arts injuries. However, the statement
AdventureOHS's insight:

This link would be handy, try as you might there will always be an injury of some degree. Knowing how to treat an injury and having the skill to administer first aid is not only essential but an asset when participating in a sport of this kind.

Dales Quest: Martial Arts Insurance - Insurance for Martial Arts Instructor & School Owners

Martial Arts Insurance can protect all parties and cover all type of martial arts style including Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts, Kickboxing and BJJ.

AdventureOHS's insight:

Insurance isn't necessary, however it would be a good idea to protect himself if someone was to injure themselves whilst under his instruction. By having insurance and complying with all the terms and conditions of this policy will enable Dale to reduce the risk of things that may happen and protect himself form litigation.

Martial Arts Risk Planner

AdventureOHS's insight:

Risk level planners are a good way to be able to plan for possible risks associated with martial arts practitioners. This would enable Dale to reduce risks by identifying them within his dojang.

Recheal: Aged Care Nurse

Recheal: Aged Care Nurse | Five Friends | Scoop.it
AdventureOHS's insight:

Recheal: Aged Care Nurse

Each of Recheal's jobs are compartmentalised to help with the mitigation of OH&S. For example whether she is handing out medication, making a bed, giving an injection or moving a patient, there are set procedures for each task that helps her assess and mitigate the risk and control the hazards associated with that particular task; for example making the beds, she has to make sure the bed is at a height suitable for all and they are to gather and not fluff the sheets/ blankets onto or off the bed for airborne particle control.

Andrew: Electrical fitter mechanic

Andrew: Electrical fitter mechanic | Five Friends | Scoop.it
AdventureOHS's insight:

Andrew: Electrical fitter mechanic

Upon speaking to Andrew and because he works with electricity I was not surprised about the amount of OH&S procedures to ensure his work sites are safe, not only fro his crew but also the general public as well. He explained that his OH&S requirements require him to fill out two forms where one form is a risk assessment of the scope of work to be carried out regardless of the environment. The second form is to assess and mitigate the hazards associated with the environment by either eliminating, substituting, engineering, administration or PPE the hazard.
