'Vissen zijn ook dieren'

'Vissen zijn ook dieren' | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

Tong plant zich voort in kweekvijver | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

PORTUGAL: La acuicultura marina se consolida como motor de crecimiento en Portugal | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

FIS - Worldnews - Freshwater salmon to grow in the Gobi desert posted by Youmanitas.nl

FIS - Worldnews - Freshwater salmon to grow in the Gobi desert posted by Youmanitas.nl | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

For the first time ever five-kilo freshwater salmon will be bred in the Gobi desert starting this year.

Billund Aquakultur Service, a high-tech company with plants in most parts of the world -- from Russian sturgeon farms to Danish eel centres -- is the company behind the modern miracle.

The Gobi desert gets no more than 50 and 100 mililitres of rain every year. Yet, Billund Aquakultur has defied the odds by saying it will be able to artificially grow freshwater salmon there.

So far, 5-kilo freshwater salmon has only been bred in recirculating plants as a test. These plants are revolutionary because they recycle water using only 1 per cent of the amount of water required to breed salmon in a conventional counterflow plant and the resultant mud and polluted water are then used to fertilize sandy soil.

Aquatic China - VIV China

AQUATIC CHINA (BY INTERNATIONAL AQUA FEED AND VIV)

The emphasis of the Aquatic China 2014 two-day conference is creating an opportunity pathway
for those in China’s aquaculture industry to connect with some of the world’s experts on aquaculture
research, science, nutrition, feed formulation, economic production, food safety, quality assurance
and certification.

Gino Smit's insight:

Throughout the world consumers’ behaviour and attitude towards food has been changing and, as
a result, the industries supplying food need to focus on the exchange of information in order to meet
these new demands.
For example, retailers are demanding traceability; evidence of sustainable environmental activities
including welfare (both social and animal) in addition to their usual tight specifications and this is
particularly relevant in aquaculture where consumer acceptance is still being questioned.
Consumers are demanding healthier food and questioning the supply chain on all nutritional
aspects, from the feed through to the food.
The emphasis of the Aquatic China 2014 two-day conference is creating an opportunity pathway
for those in China’s aquaculture industry to connect with some of the world’s experts on aquaculture
research, science, nutrition, feed formulation, economic production, food safety, quality assurance
and certification.
Whilst the demand for aquatic food products is on the rise everywhere, the importance of delivering
live, fresh, frozen, canned and dried seafood products safely with an extended shelf life is increasing
the challenges that confront the industry.
In addition, producers are faced with increased costs, additional rules and regulations and the
potential of animal diseases that can decimate their production and processing activities.
In a lead up event to VIV China 2014 we look forward to you engaging with us at this important

Aquacultuurtechnieken - Visserij - Europese Commissie | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

Romania church installs aquaponics system - NCN News posted by Youmanitas.nl

Romania church installs aquaponics system - NCN News posted by Youmanitas.nl | Fish in Demand -Aquaculture-and-More by Youmanitas | Scoop.it

The Church of the Nazarene in Tigmandru, Romania, is installing an aquaponics system this month to grow fish, fruit, and vegetables.

Kyle Petrie, who helped develop a aquaponics system on the rooftop of a Nazarene church in Jerusalem, Israel, assisted the Tigmandru church in planning and installing the system.

The system includes three tanks to raise fish and a section to grow strawberries, peppers, and lettuce. The produce will be given to families in the church and will create income for the congregation, said missionary Roberta Bustin.

"We want to minister to the whole person, so we try to have a holistic ministry," Bustin said. "Very few [in the village] have permanent jobs. Almost nobody in the church has a job. As part of our ministry to them, we try to provide some part-time jobs for some people."
