Fish and Friends Storytime
I have decided to create a storytime for children ages 3-5. In my story time, I have included several different type of activities including read aloud, song, dance and craft making.

The storytime will focus on fish, other sea and ocean creatures, and friendship. The storytime puts an emphasis on print awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary and narrative skills.

The reason I decided on this theme is because it goes well with summertime and I feel that friendship and its meaning is very important for children to learn at a young age.

Though I have decided to order my storytime aspects, you can conduct them in any way you wish, I just prefer this order. Hope you enjoy!

For sale is an ocean animal handmade 11 piece felt board set. (Felt board not included) I will include a cute rhyme and a cute song that is
Alessandra Petrino's insight:

#1: Introduction

To begin this storytime, I have chosen this flannel board of ocean and sea animals.  With the children, I will discuss the types of animals we find in the ocean and simple characteristics of each animal (i.e. octupus have eight legs, crabs have claws, etc).  With each characteristic, I will ask the children to point to the correct animal.  This is a good introduction for the storytime as many of these animals will appear in the books chosen to read aloud and the activities the children will be asked to participate in.  I found this board on etsy.com, but you can also make these.

#3 Book 1: Bright Stanley by Matt Buckingham

#3 Book 1: Bright Stanley by Matt Buckingham | Fish and Friends Storytime | Scoop.it
A dedication to the best selling 'Bright Stanley' picture book and the follow up story - 'Bright Stanley and the Cave Monster'
Alessandra Petrino's insight:

I chose to include this book in my storytime because its a lot of fun and ties in with the theme of friendship.

The story is about a bright fish named Stanley, who wakes up late one morning to find all his friends have left without him.  In an effort to find his friends, Stanley ventures out in the ocean alone and encounters other creatures from lobsters to sharks.  It emphasizes the importance of friendship, when at the end, Stanley finds that his friends have been looking for him all along and the school of fish is reunited.

The pictures in this book are great and very bright.  The story emphasizes print awareness and new vocabulary.

Alessandra Petrino's insight:

This story is about an unlikely friendship.  When a very curious snail wishes to explore the world, a humpback whale answers his ad for a ride around the world.  So on the whale's tale the snail explores the world he never thought he would get to see and along the way becomes friends with the whale, an animal much bigger than he.  It is only when the whale finds himself lost and ends up beached in a bay that the snail realizes though he is much smaller, he can help save the whales life.

This is a great story about friendship and ocean critters.  It emphasizes phonological awareness, as the entire story is in a rhyming format.  Also it introduces new vocabulary for children and print awareness thoughout each page.

Alessandra Petrino's insight:

This is a great song that involves repetition, hand motion and movement for the children.  It is fun and can be altered if needed.  I included this as the second activity for this storytime because it works well after the introduction of the sea animals flannel board and makes the children feel involved in the storytime right from the beginning.

#5 Song 2: The Fishy Pokey

Alessandra Petrino's insight:

After reading both stories, I included this song and dance.  It is the "Fishy Pokey" like the "Hokey Pokey" only with fish body movements.  I think it is great for this storytime because it emphasizes repetition as well as hand motion and movement.  It also teaches the children about direction, right and left, as well as parts of the fish.

#6 Conclusion: Simple Craft- Paper Plate Fish

Alessandra Petrino's insight:

I decided to conclude my storytime with a simple craft.  This video shows how children can make simple paper plate fish.  There are also videos for other paper plate sea animals such as jellyfish and octopus.

This final activity allows the children to run with their creativity as they cut and paste, color and decorate, and perhaps even name their new paper plate critter.
