Test Smoke Alarms with Real Smoke, Not Just That Convenient Button

Test Smoke Alarms with Real Smoke, Not Just That Convenient Button | Fire Safety | Scoop.it
Ask someone how to test a smoke alarm, and chances are you'll be told to press the "test" button on the device. The Boston Globe points out that this is a myth (a dangerous one at that).
Acme Fire and Safety Co. Ltd.'s insight:

Not so Fast!

Read your installation and maintenance manual that comes with the smoke detector. If you do not have one look it up on line.

In Canada the unit should be ULC approved, which means that using the "test button" is an approved way to test the device.

BRK First Alert manual states the unit should be tested weekly, not just once a month. The devices should be cleaned monthly either with a vacuum or by using a canned air. Do not use rechargable batteries when replacing the battery annually.  If the alarm ever fails to test properly, replace it immediatley.Proper preventative maintenance will save lifes.
