Prompted by another thread; I pretty much understand the difference between UK & US/Canadian Rank Structures in the Big Cities. And although there
jack woods's insight:
This website gives almost the same rankings as the last website i looked at. Some possitions have different names, depending on the state and department. Also it depends on the size and population of the area you are working in. The level of work in a small town is a lot different compared to a fire fighter in New york. So a captain of a small town verys from a captain in a big town/ city.
Firefighters (historically firemen) are rescuers extensively trained in firefighting, primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten property and civilian or natural populations and to rescue people from dangerous situations, such as collapsed or burning buildings
The complexity of modern industrialized life with a greater prominence of hazards has created an increase in the skills needed in firefighting technology and a broadening of the firefighter-rescuer's remit. They sometimes provide emergency medical services, for example. The fire service, or fire and rescue service, also known in some countries as the fire brigade or fire department, is one of the main emergency services. Firefighting and firefighters have become ubiquitous around the world, from wildland areas to urban areas, and aboard ships.
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, the English word "firefighter" has been used since 1903. In recent decades it has become the preferred term, replacing the older "fireman", since many women serve as firefighters, and also because the term "fireman" can have other meanings, including someone who sets or stokes fires – the opposite of the firefighting role.
This website gives the exact description of the possitions of a fire fighter and exactly what they do. Fire fighting was ranked as one of the most stressful jobs in America. There is a lot for them to do and it requires a lot of time and effort from them. You have to pass many ability tests to become one since its so demanding. They do it all to save lives of people.

jack woods's insight:
This websites list all the different rankings in the fire fighting field. There are eight different possitions to be in. There is the FIre Fighter, Driver, Lieutenaut, Captain, Senior Captain, Battalion Chief, Distric Chief, and Deputy or Assistant Chief. The website gives a discription of each ranking of possitions. It takes time to get to different levels. Its by skill level, experience, and time in the field. Not all departments have all 8 levels of rankings.
