Why Finland loves saunas

Why Finland loves saunas | Finland | Scoop.it

The only Finnish word to make it into everyday English is "sauna". But what it is, and how much it means to Finns, is often misunderstood - and it's definitely not about flirtation or sex.

In a dimly lit wood panelled room, naked men sit in silence, sweating. One beats himself repeatedly with birch branches. Another stands, takes a ladle of water and carefully pours it over the heated stones of the stove in the corner.

There is a hissing noise.

Why Scandinavian Prisons Are Superior | Finland | Scoop.it

It’s a postcard-perfect day on Suomenlinna Island, in Helsinki’s South Harbor. Warm for the first week of June, day trippers mix with Russian, Dutch, and Chinese tourists sporting sun shades and carrying cones of pink ice cream.

“Is this the prison?” asks a 40-something American woman wearing cargo pants and a floral sleeveless blouse...

Finland from a Teacher's Perspective

Finland from a Teacher's Perspective | Finland | Scoop.it

I was asked by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to write an article comparing the US and Finnish education systems; I was pleased to do so. It took me hours upon hours because I wanted to do justice to the comparison. As you already know, I love Finland, its people, and I love what Finns do for their children. I hope I've captured some of this beauty.

Enjoy!

Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times

Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times | Finland | Scoop.it

Salo is perhaps the best place to gauge the rise and fall of Nokia. The small town 100km west of Helsinki was the birthplace of the Finnish group’s mobile phone business in the late 1970s.

As Nokia grew into the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, so did its importance to the town: at its peak it employed 5,000 of the 26,000 workers in Salo and contributed €50m in corporate taxes to the city’s budget.

Then came Nokia’s fall and a drastic cutting back, leaving only 1,200 workers today – all of whom are destined to move to Microsoft under its €5.44bn deal to buy the Finnish group’s mobile phone business.

Nokia: End of the line - FT.com

Nokia: End of the line - FT.com | Finland | Scoop.it

Nokia’s past and what could have been Nokia’s future come together in the evening sun on the Helsinki waterfront, outside a café housed in the Finnish group’s old cable factory. Harri Kiljander, a former Nokia manager, is showing off a prototype of the chunky, half-moon-shaped 7700, one of the company’s first forays into the touchscreen devices that now dominate the mobile phone market.

The 7700, which dates from 2003, was never released. A follow-up model was discontinued. When Apple revolutionised the smartphone market with its iPhone in 2007, Nokia, the world’s largest handset manufacturer until last year, was left trailing. On Tuesday, the company passed to Microsoft the supremely difficult mission of catching up with rivals, agreeing the takeover of its mobile phones business in a $5.4bn deal.

Finnish government plans to trim generous welfare model

Finnish government plans to trim generous welfare model | Finland | Scoop.it

(Reuters) - Finland's government announced a long-term plan to start scaling back its welfare system, one of the most generous in the world, aiming to preserve its triple-A credit rating in the face of a slower economy and aging population.

In a statement on Thursday, the government laid out a wide range of measures, including a hike to the effective retirement age to 62.4 in 2025 from a current 60.9. It also said it could force municipalities to consolidate and speed up health care reforms.

The changes are not immediate but are likely to put off some voters who may see them as steps towards destroying a welfare model which, like those of its Nordic neighbors, emphasizes social equality and well-being.
